They do a mouth swab or a blood test. The first is faster though.

In the U.S., we used to only use the blood testing method. That test had testees waiting a few days for test results. That is a scary window of time for anyone. Now, we use, often, the swab test that gives the person taking the test an answer of neg. or pos. within 5-20 minutes! That is really better, as I see it, as those most likely to have HIV are those who don't have a home to go to, and even remembering what day they are supposed to go back for the results can be hard for many.........let alone a transportation problem. Many people are quiet about getting tested in the first place. Having to return to get results can really make it hard to keep everything 'normal' looking to partners, spouses, etc..
