Cleanliness and appropriate furnishings.

Fully furnished room for the child, with clothes, toys, bed and appropriate space for each.

Fully stocked fridge (yes, they will look in it, so clear out any alcohol!)

Appropriate safety measures based upon the age of the child (i.e. cabinet locks, poisonous substances, plants, cords out of reach)

Pets properly trained/contained

They will speak to family members, so coach them accordingly.

Be prepared for them to be rifling through medicine cabinets, drawers, etc. Make sure knives, scissors, etc. are out of reach.

They will be looking to make sure you have a safe and healthy living environment for the child. They will want to see a clean house with sufficient room, toxins and medicines out of reach, basic safety things with the house like exposed wiring or no stair railings and things like that.

They will want to make sure that your home is a better environment, overall for her than where she is currently. They may interview you and any other family members in the home as well.

Just keep in mind that social services is not evil. They are really no one to fear. Just do your best for the kids and social services will be happy.

Good luck with the custody issue.

Make sure the child will have a place to sleep and put his things, make sure home is clean and safe, no alcohol in the house, no weapons in the house--some states will allow weapons if they are locked away from the chilren, they will talk to you both and talk to any other children living in the home, make sure you have basic things like electricity, running water, working telephone, see that there is food in the house, make sure there is outdoor play area for the child that is safe.

They just look to see how your home is, and if you have room for the other child. Make sure your home is clean and tiddy, and make sure to point out the child thats going to live with you will have its own space.
