Actually, the Army isn't supposed to smile for their official pics either. After 18 years, I don't have a single pic of my hubby in uniform with a smile on his face. The Marines aren't angry, they're just more disciplined than some of the younger generation joining the Army that thinks it's about fun and games. Hopefully, some of them will learn the respect that the older generation in the military was taught from the beginning.

The Marines aren't smiling in their pictures because they are part way through the hardest, most challenging thing they will ever do in their lifetime. They are being pushed farther than they thought they were capable of going. Earning the title of Marine isn't a happy go lucky party. It's learning that that the human spirit can overcome all as long as there is belief in ones self. That picture is taken at a time in boot camp when you still don't know if you have what it takes. Hence...no smile

I really have no idea, but when I was in the Army, Basic was two months, but Marines had THREE! Maybe the Marines are thinking, "I will never leave Parris Island. I am stuck here for a quarter of a year!"

have you ever seen what they go through just to get the title of being a Marine... Me and My boyfriend who is enlisting in the Marines watched a show on how they are trained looked pretty hard. My sisters boyfriend who is the army said their training isn't as hard as Marines.. Plus marines are the first in last out (marines are older then the U.S)...

Probley because they are wearing their uniform and American civilians are going to see the picture.
When an American civilian looks at a picture of a Marine they want to see an individual who looks professional, and diligent.
They dont want to see someone in uniform who looks like they are taking their high school graduation picture. They want to see an individual who is serious about defending them, and their rights.
Another reason could be that they make you take a picture while in bootcamp with the drill instructors standing just out of camara range.
Pick a reason, both are valid.

When I was in (US Army) we were not allowed to smile in our official pics either...Unit, Battalion, any formal pics.
The Marines are always on the frontlines too, so I imagine that they seldom have anything to smile about...

I just watched my boyfriend's platoon video. He's looks pretty tough. But it's also pretty hot. They have to look confident and serious. They're Marines!!
