im trying to build an electrolysis thingy to clean some stuff up, the plans i have say i need an ac/dc converter and suggests 6-12 Volts and 250-500 mili-Amps, i dont know much about electronics and was wondering if a 9v battery would work as a substitute power supply since theyre cheaper and id feel safer not cutting up stuff plugged into the wall and putting it in water

A 9 volt battery would be hard-pressed to provide that much current for more than a few minutes.

A 6 volt lantern battery (or 2 of them in series), or even a motorcycle or car battery would be a better choice.

If you don't know much about electricity, then please do not plug into the wall. The different between the electricity in the wall outlet and the battery is AC and DC. Your battery is DC while wall outlet has AC (deadly!). For the electrolysis, no need for wall outlet, or AC/DC converter, the batteries would do it. However, you need to connect the batteries in series connection for a higher voltage. Connecting the bateries from positiive terminal of one baterry to negative terminal of the next battery would create a series connection. How many batteries you will need depends on how much voltage/current you need for electrolysis and how long the process is. Moreover, if I remember it correctly, for cleaning some stuff out of a metal, you would need a reverse electrolysis, and so make sure you'll check on that too. Good luck!
