The Latin verb debeo (other principle parts are debere, debui, debitum) is the root word for debt. It means, among other things, "to owe".

Actually, having studied the English language from its inception and split from the Germanic root, its det. Only in the 1600's did people put the "b" in there to make it look more Latin.
