I'm a devout Christian who is disgusted with how most churches are run. Churches that are run by wicked men and women with selfish motives. Churches that waste tithe money on themselves and unnecessarity building amenities--laser shows, big bands, high-tech sounds equipment etc... Churches that preach steps to great wealth and success and sell their tapes and books and dvds promoting their "self-help" nonsense, promoting selfishness and greed and exploiting souls by the thousands...Churches that shun and boycott things with great ease, force their political and social ideals by twisting the words of the bible...
Know any churches that DON'T do this in So Cal? Preferrably ones that welcome punks and their notions of rebellion and against conformity?
I don't care if the church is only a dozen people. Actually, I'd PREFER that to a church with an arena that holds 8,000.

Please do not misunderstand, I'm not trying to find an exclusively "Punk rock church" but a church that...pay attention to the keyword here: WELCOMES punks. Big difference.
And my definition of punk is far broader than just the music one listens to. It's about thinking for yourself, asking questions, challenging rules that don't make sense, fighting blind conformity, welcoming freedin of expression and on and on and on. Didn't Jesus fight against injustices and immoral behavior? Didn't he question political authority? Didn't he love and welcome the prostitutes and beggars?
If you are a "Christian" and don't know what being punk means and yet you still feel the need to attack me, you need to look up the word "irony" in the dictionary...because you're the type of person that fills the churches I'm talking about.

While I have never been to the Rock Church in San Diego, I have heard many good things about it. Miles McPherson is the pastor. He used to be a San Diego Charger, I believe. The Easter service will have Chargers Running Back LaDanian Tomlinson speaking. LT is also a Christian. The Rock IS a large church, which is something you said you prefer to stay away from. Still, it has a reputation for being a very popular with teens and young adults. I would say, from what I have heard, that the majority of the people who attend that church fall into that category. I don't know where in Southern California you are referring to, but if you are in the San Diego area, you could check out The Rock Church (not "rock" as in music, but "rock" as in "Christ, the solid Rock").
If interested, their address is: 3554 Ruffin Rd., San Diego, CA 92123
Their phone number is: (619) 226-7625
Their website is: www.therocksandiego.org
I hope you find what you are looking for.

I do not mean to offend, but I can see how rebellion can be likened with sinful nature. However, as long as you are not rebelling against God, but the sinful natures of some of today's churches, than you are doing all right. As for a suggestion of a church to attend, might I suggest a Nazarene church? I have been a member of Kingman First Church of the Nazarene since I was 13 only because that is the youngest member my specific church would allow. I had been attending since I was 4. I was also on the church board and the president of Nazarene Youth International. I am not currently attending because I am stationed here in So Cal with my husband and have become a bit lazy on my Sunday mornings. The Nazarene church is one that accepts all people from all walks of life. If you hear our music and want to walk in in tattered clothes, torn jeans, no shoes on your feet or safety pins in your face (not saying that you do and certainly not judging) we welcome you with open arms. It is not the outside that matters, only what is on the inside and only God can judge that. Yes, we do pass around a collection plate, but we do not tell you how much to contribute. That, too, is between you and God. Please, check out this site and see if this is what you are looking for.

I am not really sure what punk rock ideals are exactly, except for the rebellion part. There is a church called Set free ministries that is small and lots of non conformists go there. They preach the word of God and lots of people come from all over to go there. They are mostly bikers and x gangsters but you may find some kindred spirits there. Hope this helps.

As a Christian that relates to your feelings, I suggest you check out Calvary Chapel. They may not be "punk" enough for you, but they teach from the bible, not the self-help crap. Their churches are often very big but that's because healthy churches grow. My experience with Calvary Chapel Santa Barbara was great. If I were you I would visit Chuck Smith's church in Costa Mesa or any of the others. Chuck Smith started Calvary Chapel during the Jesus movement in the 70's. He is a man of God and his teachings are biblical and inspired.

It is called being spiritual and avoiding those nonsense businesses called church's. I find that most people who attend church are closed minded and they do not care about you at all. They just want your money.
I live in the south and my city has a lot of southern baptist followers. They seem to be the worst. They are judgemental and believe they are better than everyone.

If you believe that ALL Christian churches are evil, then why not begin a Punk Rock Christian Church?
Before you know it, others will say it's evil. That's why the old communist soviet leaders killed all who criticized them.

You might try the Roman Catholic Church.
You are not judged by what you wear or your hair style.
It sounds like you are seeking a true union with God, leaving the fluff alone. I was also and became Catholic.
Give it a look, you might be suprised!
Peace!

Demanding a Punk Rock connection isn't a selfish motive? Come on!
Besides, now we have the new style punk rock that really isn't the punk rock of old. Which one. now we have to cater to your demands according to what you say?
Where's God in all this? Does God have to like the Ramone's or Panic! at the Disco?
By your leave, of course!
