The HSUS quotes that 3-4 million animals are killed in shelters each year. It does not break down how many are dogs, cats, rabbits, ferrets, etc on this link: http://www.hsus.org/pets/issues_affecting_our_pets/pet_overpopulation_and_ownership_statistics/hsus_pet_overpopulation_estimates.html
http://www.hsus.org/pets/issues_affecting_our_pets/pet_overpopulation_and_ownership_statistics/us_pet_ownership_statistics.html
In 1996, of 4 million dogs taken in, 2.4 were euthanized, but obivously things have changed since then. http://www.psyeta.org/sa/sa7.1/frommer.html

I think the stats you are looking for exactly are the ones that say what the dogs are euthanized for. As in, not enough room at the shelter, too sick, too old, owner requested and behavior issues.
You won't find those stats anywhere, at least I have never found them. The HSUS loves to use the 4-6 million pets are euthanized each year because they are homeless, but they don't tell you there are other reasons for animals being euthanized, because if they did, then people would no longer shell out there money in donations.
Please do your report the right way and include if you can find it, all the statistics on why pets are euthanized each year and as I mentioned, it's not all because there are no homes for them all.

You might check with the National Humane Society at the URL I've included. If you cannot find it on their website, they do have contact information.
From their website:
How many animals enter shelters each year? And how many are euthanized?
The HSUS estimates that animal shelters care for between 6–8 million dogs and cats every year in the United States, of whom 3–4 million are euthanized. This is certainly a tragedy. There are simply not enough responsible homes for all of these wonderful, innocent animals. At this point in time, it would be impossible to humanely house every unwanted animal in the United States.

Call the Animal Welfare League, local shelters, rescue groups, city pounds etc. I know that here in AZ it's an average of a thousand dogs and cats each that are euthanised every day. Good luck, people need to hear what you have to say.

Sure. I volunteer for my local Humane Society (which is a no-kill shelter), I imagine the website might help.

In L.A. it's about 2000 per week. It's just enough to keep up with the ones who are born every week.
