I've been building up the distances that I jog. This week I have been jogging aprox 3 miles each session. Normally I get shin splints right around my ankles, but this hasn't been happening. Instead it's right below my knees. Is this shin splints or just sore muscles? Are there any stretches that can target that area?

forgot to mention that I do warm up and stretch before jogging and then I do a good cool down and stretch after too.

Should I switch jogging or the elliptical walker? Or maybe just jog a smaller distance?

Guess I should have said that it is not painful. Just a little bit sore. I have really good running shoes and have either been running on grass or the indoor running track.

if you've got shin splints--they don't just go away like a cold or something.
You sould not be jogging. Get out of denial or get more hip on shin splints. They sound innoculous--they aren't cured easily

If it's right below your knees it could be tendonitis or bursitis. That just means you have inflamed either the tendons or the bursa sack, which is a fluid-filled sack bellow your knee. Try not to run on pavement because that puts a lot of strees on the joints. A rubber track surface or dirt or grass is the best. Also your shoes mmight be the proble, Maybe you should try a new pair of running shoes. Go easy on them for now and, ice them, elevate them and take an anti-inflamatory for the pain.
