I worked in daycare and the protocol was that when a child reaches 24 months or the top rail reaches their chest it is time to transfer to a bed, whichever comes first. Of course if the child can climb out at 10 months then you should do it then.

I moved my son from his crib to a toddler bed when he was 18 months and learned to climb out by himself. Now he is 28 months and I'm getting ready to move him to a regular bed because he stands on the railing for the toddler bed.

My eldest was a little over two years of age ... my second child is going to be 3 in june and there is no way she will be going to a bed soon as she flies all over the place during the night ... but my 18 month old will probably be in a bed at 2 because she sleeps in one spot... so I guess it depends on the child.
Don't rush it ..it's not a big deal you can leave them in a crib as long as they fit but make sure it has a good matress in it.

My son is 28 months. I am deciding to make the transition when he is not taking long naps during the day. (he still will take a 2-3 hr nap, but probably wouldn't be able to lay down still without the railings)
I think it should be based on communication too. Another reason for my decision is that my son is not communicating to me, or understanding fully what I say. He would not realize at this stage in his life that he needs to stay in the bed when his toys are right on the shelf lol. Also the same reason we have not started potty training yet. The full communication is just not there.

some say 2, but by the time they get to two they have becomed attached, my daughter used a toddler bed at 19 months and my son at 16 months, only b/c he was climbing the crib, but it depends on the child.

Every child is different. As soon as you spend more time putting the child in bed rather than taking them out; it is probably time to get them a regular bed. If they can get in and out on their own - why not have a regular bed for them. most toddlers are ready for their own bed between the ages of 18 months and 2 years

I went right now from the crib to a twin mattress at sixteen months. To be trustworthy, i might advise which you do no longer waste your funds on a baby mattress. they're purely meant for use as a transition so they are no longer o.k. equipped; they're relatively flimsy. Your baby will outgrow it very at as quickly as. purely save the money you will possibly have used for a sturdy twin mattress with siderails.

i did it for my son's 2nd birthday. The first week was interesting, and he fell out every night. Luckily they are low and he didn't even wake up. It seemed like the right time, and he's happy now. It's been 2 months. Good luck.
