I took on my grandmothers canary when she died in september and he has been colour fed so he is bright red. I know that to keep the colour I should colour feed him so I've been feeding him Color Treat from Hagen. This years feathers are starting to come through but they're white, there's no colour in them at all. He loves his colour feed, he actually doesn't eat his regular seed and goes mad when I bring his colour feed bowl to him so I know it's not because he isn't eating the colour supplement. Why has he lost his colour?

Stress can actually cause the bird's colors to change. I rescue, and we had a Greenwing Macaw in for about six weeks who's underside feathers were all a creamy white color. That bird had been through so much that he actually lost his colors.

I would imagine that he's probably grieving the loss of your Grandmother, especially if she spent a lot of concentrated time with him, and now he's cage bound.

There could also be some vitamin deficiencies that are causing the color change. It's the beginning of a new molt, too so that could be the cause.

The stock answer will be to take him to the vet, but I'm surmising that it's going to be a trial and error treatment for him. You'll have to experiment with different things to see if that helps.

His body could have adjusted to the dyes in the seeds and has build a immune system against it? But in case call a local vet.

http://www.centralpets.com/animals/birds/songbirds/sbd4299.html This article is informative and may help.http://www.birdsupplynh.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=586&osCsid=6ecfc7f159a1199b4083cab357707887 This is nutritionally sound. I think a change in his diet can intensify his color. This diet is made specifically for that and has a good protein amount. Have a great day everyday

it might be molting and the feathers are fallling out and the new ones need to grow in and get their color
or
it might be sick or old
or
sometimes they do this because of season change or habitat change...the fethers will prolly turn back to normal color when spring is over
