No way you are not wrong!!! My husband and I just went through this with my 9 yr old daughter, she made her Christmas list and it was full of stuff like a laptop, ipod, CELL PHONE, and I wanted to get her an ipod since we usually try to get them at least one thing from their list. but my husband refused he said think of what you got for Christmas when you were 9 and I said but times have changed and he said okay fine if we give her this stuff now what will she be asking for when she is a teenager?? I thought about it and decided he was right out children are growing up to soon in this crazy fast paced world and that's not good so she didn't get anything on her list that consisted of electronics, and you know what she was fine... we just explained to her that she was too young even if some of her friends had them... Don't let your kids grow up too fast.

No, you are not wrong for saying no..but if you ever decide to say yes, buy a cheap pay as you go phone and use it when your child feels he needs to be in touch with you. Put it away when not in use. You can always restart service in a matter of minutes and it's not very expensive.
Nobody knows for sure what the long term health risks are from using cell phones everyday.

You are perfectly right for not giving him a cell phone. If there is a phone completely accesible to him with no circumstances then you should start teaching him responsibility by making him earn a cell phone if its that important to him. Tell him how much a phone cost the responsibilities that come along with it and how he can earn it by doint small jobs around the house and around the neighborhood.

I think you are totally right. Not very many parents have the balls to say no to their children anymore and they just give them what they want because they don't feel like being a real parent. AWESOME FOR YOU!!!!!! I don't have kids yet but when I do, my children won't have a cell phone until they're at least 16, have a job, and are paying/helping pay for it themselves. Doing this teaches the child responsibility, not that they'll get anything they want and don't have to do a darn thing to get it. I vote you as PARENT OF THE YEAR!!!!!! Keep it up... you're doing just fine...

I agree, I don't think there is any reason a ten year old would need his own phone.
If it comes to a point where you need to get ahold of him while he is out there are many phone plans that offer mulitple phones on the same line and he can take one with him for emergency use only, to be returned when he got home.
Also there are those Firefly(?) phones. That have no number keys, and the parent inputs which numbers can be called from the phone, and I do believe what numbers can come in.
Good luck with your tween.

lol hes ten. I don't think my brother who is 15 needs a cell phone, but my mom will get him one soon. There is this phone though that only calls three numbers. You program them in and he can use that to call for rides etc. I don't even know if they still sell them, but that would be a good start say around 12. :)

You're right! He doesn't need a cell phone. It's nice to have things to look forward to in the teen years- and to be able to use this as a reward for good behavior during those tough years.

My daughter has had her cell phone for 7 months and she just turned 10 in January. I always know where she is, but it is very convenient to call her when she is at her friends house to check on her, to call her when she is across the street playing at her friends house for her to have it in case of an emergency situation on the school bus or anything. I feel more secure know that she has her phone on her at all times. She takes it to school, she turns it off when she arrives and keeps it in her back pack.
