I have 2 and they are the sweetest birds! Make sure you get a hand raised one. They are relatively inexpensive and make great beginner birds.Just make sure to interact with them daily. They are so loving and need to be with their people.
Good Luck!

I have had cockatiels.

Cockatiels are small parrots that make excellent pets. Cockatiels are second only to parakeets in types of pet popularity. They come in a lot of color mutations, some more unseen than others. The price can be different depending on how popular a certain color mutation is and its current availability.

It is best to get a young bird that is NOT hand fed. They cost less and make a great companion

Cockatiels are very lovey birds that will sometimes learn tricks to please their owners. They can speak and make sounds, but their voice is very high-pitched so it can be hard to hear the words. However, their way of whistling is unique Any cockatiels can be taught songs with day and night practice. Cockatiels have powder on their feathers so they can clean themselves. The powder can be a horrible for very allergic people. also it tends to leave a layer on things around the cage. mostly it is not a problem, but if you are a neat freak or highly allergic, a cockatiel is not the best choice.

Their lifespan is 15-20 years. A healthy diet and adequate exercise is important.

A bad thing with some cockatiels is the horrible scary, night frights. a night fright is when they are startled in the night and they thrash in the cage, sometimes breaking a blood feather. I suggest a nightlight near the cage.

My seven year old son, Alex has a cockatiel named Disco.

Cockatiels are PERFECT for beginners. Above any other bird, I'd rather see someone breaking into birds get a cockatiel instead of a Quaker or something else that's larger.

Cockatiels easily learn tricks, males can learn to talk, are excellent whistlers (Disco is already badly butchering Bobby Darrin's Don't Worry Be Happy whistle...and she's a girl!), and if worked with are very loving and like attention.

Good choice!

I have a few cockatiels they are great. If you want a great friend make sure you pay attention to them. They are playful, nice, smart, and pretty birds but they need someone to love them. I bought 2 from an auction last year and they were not cared for properly. I can barely put my hand in the cage without them throwing a fit. But I also have one that I've had for years his name is Sweet Pea and he loves being on or around me all the time I'm home. Just a little precaution it's not good to have any kind of inhalent around birds, such as smoke or spraying air freshners. Anyway Great birds for first timers Good Luck!

I have had cockatiels in the past and they are great birds for beginners. Cockatiels are a good size, not too noisy, and don't need a gigantic cage. They are very social and usually gentle. Try to get a hand fed cockatiel so that it will already be tame and used to people when you buy it. Make sure to read up on proper bird care before you get one. Buy a high quality cage and please read up on diet - birds need pellets, some, seeds, and fruits and vegetables every day!

I have one right now. They are very easy to take care of. You just need a lot of time to spend with them because they really love their flock (aka their people) and want to be with them all the time.

Good for beginners because they don't bite hard and it helps to know a bird's typical body language, so you when they want to be left alone, etc. That's not a lesson to find out with a larger parrot ;-) Also generally easier to tame than a budgie, who can be more nervous around bigger hands.

Cockatiels are wonderfull 1st birds. I suggest you get a few books on them and make sure you understand all about them 1st, but that should be done for any animal anyway. They are friendly and easy to teach words, too.

In my experience, cockatiels aren't difficult to care for, but you do need to inform yourself, as some of the details aren't intuitive. They need attention, so get them out every day. if you're going out of town, I suggest not leaving it alone, even if it has enough food and water. leave it with someone who can interact with it.

A 'tiel is a bit of a commitment; they live around fifteen years. I love my bird. She's a joy to have around.

I don't have a cockatiel but to my knowledge they live for quite a long time and need a lot of attention.
