if it has a zipper on the jacket, you can make a name tag..kind of like a ski pass that you hook onto your jacket zipper. It hangs from the zipper so there are no holes in the jacket.

Just make some little fabric tags and sew them to the jacket or the tag. When it comes time to sell you can just rip the stitches out and remove the tag. Removing the stitches shouldn't damage the fabric, but if you are worried sew it to the tag, no one cares if the tag has a few holes in it.

I hate the marker too-however, the staff at day care doesn't have the time to figure out what coat goes with what child. Without a name in it, you make the day harder for them. And even if you think your child's one of a kind coat is easy to spot-mix it in with 5 other unlabled coat and you will see it isnt easy. I have given up on cute and unique things for day care-between finger paints, learning to feed himself, and the joys of the playground my son's day care clothes are beyond re-using. I keep a collection of clothes that go to day care and nice ones for home and going out. Things going to day care won't be free of stains or names, so resale shouldn't be a factor. Let them go, get dirty, have fun, be a kid-and yes, have that coat with their initials written in big black letters on the tag:)

I always use a permanent marker on the inside tag, so I can just cut the tag off when she outgrows the stuff and I'm ready to give it away.

Write on a swatch of fabric and stitch it to the inside of his coat. When it's time to sell the coat, cut the stitches and remove the swatch.

I go to rummage sales and could care less if a name is on the inside. Otherwise just use masking tape.
