I bought a set last year made with Micro-fiber. It has been FANTASTIC. My cats were furniture scratchers and have never bothered with this set. It's not pleasing to their claws if they were to scratch it (was my major concern when deciding what we would buy).
The cat hair doesn't stick to it. I have 2 long-haired cats, they have adopted the chair for sleeping on and there is never fur on it. I haven't figured out why that is, it just...is.
Clean up is a breeze. I also have 2 kids and babysit toddlers. Lots of milk has been spilled on my couch during nap time. It leaves a mark, but all I have to do is make lots of bubbles in a little bit of water with dish soap, use a cloth to rub the bubbles (not the water) onto the spot in a circular motion, and when it dries, it's completely gone. Bird poop also comes off just as easily and anything that manages to dry on the fabric and be picked off easily. It doesn't seep in.
I recommend micro-fiber to anyone with pets or children.
Oh and, the kids like it too because they can draw picture's in in with their fingers and wipe it away. I see a lot of "I'm sitting here, find your own spot" etched onto the cushions, lol.

I don't have any suggestions for a good fabric (except I've heard good things about microfiber), but I can definitely warn you about the type of fabric I chose for my couch. The best way to describe the fabric on my couch is woven or corderoy (sp?). It is an absolute nightmere to clean, especially with my indoor German Shephard that sheds like crazy year round. The animal hair threads itself into the woven fabric, making it a hassle to clean!!! I've resorted to using a plain sheet as a couch cover. It's easier to just pop the sheet in the wash than to try to vaccumm all the dog hair off the couch.
Good luck with finding the right furnature!

My roommate purchased leather furniture, and we have 1 cat. There's usually a blanket somewhere on the furniture at all times (roommates like to nap on the couch).
Whenever my cat is in the living room, she goes directly to the blanketed area. She almost never lays on the leather itself.

Chenille is great because you won't see pulls from claws in it. However, it is a pain in the butt to keep hair-free.
Microfiber is good, but it shows pulls and cat hair tends to static to it.
We have a canvas type scotchguarded couch with a print. Pulls rarely happen and when they do, it's veiled by the print. It's fairly easy to clean.
We also have the microfiber and the chenille, but the canvas is, by far, the easiest to care for and keep nice looking.

i have had both a leather sofa, and an ultrasuede sofa, and both are great for pet owners. leather probably is slightly better, as it is more durable and can be repaired fairly easily, but ultrasuede is also very good (and looks pretty good in my opinion)
this is also the only time i would recommend scotchgarding your sofa. i usually look at it as a waste of money, until our kitten pottied on our sofa about a month after i bought it. the sofa repelled it wonderfully, and it cleaned up without hassle.

I was totally against the newer microfiber suede like materials around my dogs nails but have been convinced it's the best. I use baby wipes for clean ups and lint brushes for any hair....haven't had one tear, pull or run by nails either and my dogs own the furniture-or act as if they do anyway.

Slip Covers are a pet owners dream... WASHABLE.. flat cotton (not velvety or looped or with texture) doesn't hold onto the pet hair very badly... broadcloth works great for me.... can be vacuumed in place (be careful as being a slip cover it may shift, hold it firmly while vacuuming) or toss in washing machine. I couldn't find anything I really liked so I made my own, really very simple

Too bad you hate leather because its the most durable fabric you can use to specify furniture.

Anything tightly woven and/or smooth is better than an open type weave that hair can get into.
