The bread was a very dark brown colour with the texture of soda bread. The size was also much smaller than your average loaf of bread and was similar in appearance to malt loaf. That is the only information I can really give other than it was in Stockholm, Sweden that we tried it. Any suggestions/ideas what this is called?

It sounds exactly like Swedish kavring. It's great with scrambled eggs, dill and smoked fish... or "gubbröra", chopped hard-boiled eggs frizzled with chopped onions and pickled anchovies in a frying-pan. Norwegian kavring is much the same, I think, but baked as small rusks, not as a loaf.

And a recipe - but only in Swedish, I'm afraid: http://www.baksida.se/recept.asp?sida=recept/kavring.asp&titel=Kavring

That sounds like "Boston Brown Bread" to me.

It's probably rye bread, very popular in Scandinavia.
