I have an old photo that has mildewed from not being protected by glass in the frame. It was packed away in a plastic tote and somehow the lid became unfastened in the shed where it was stored. This photo is very precious and sentimental to my family. Does anyone know of a safe way to remove the mildew without damaging the picture itself? I think it may be the only one of its kind so there may be no way of reproducing it from another.

try allowing the photo to 'air dry'. This should allow the mildew to be gently wiped with a soft dry cloth or ever so carefully scraped off with use of very little pressure. I've never had this happen to my older photos so this is not a tried and true thing. You might have to resort to haveing the picture scanned and restored. (restoration work is what I do) I've had to do THAT to a dozen of my family's older pictures......
I have used this method successfully on newer pictures taken after 1960

Mildew stain is very hard to get rid of. The safest way for a precious picture is to scan it and cover the stain with photo editing software. That way the original does not risk getting worse from the cleaning process.

I used this method on my wife's high school graduation portrait. It was very tedious work, but the restored version looks great!

Professional photo restoration is also available.

Good Luck

if you are an expert in Adobe photoshop then you can fix easily all those photos. otherwise, need to be taken to some one, who can play well with graphic software. Best of luck!!!!!!!!1
