The First World War was the result of nations overreacting to provocations that we would easily endure today, plus the problem of secret alliances.
If ther had been a more equitable settlement of WWI, there would not have been a WWII. If we did for the vanquished countries what we did for Germany after WWII, there never would ahve been the conditions that allowed a Hitler to rise to power.

Any war "can" be averted, though WWI and II were rather exceptional cases. The treaty system in place before WWI and heightened sense of nationalism combined with the ease with which European powers had been knocking out weaker powers during the colonial and imperial phases of their existence rendered it almost inescapable that a minor European incident would eventually cause a major conflict involving most of Europe. WWII, on the other hand, was not "as" inevitable: German "salami" tactics and the treaty with Stalin rather set the stage, and the concept of "Liebensraum" (sp) rather insured eventual conflict.

At the time I think it was pretty much inevitable, just like putting more and more water into a 1 gallon water balloon, sure it holds more but eventually it will break. Same was witht he tensions that caused both wars, it could have held a little longer but eventually war would have broken out. Some historians argue that both wars were just one big war with a break in between

If the 1st World War were averted, then perhaps the 2nd World War would not be so serious.
Germany, after the end of World War I, was totally impoverished. And decades after that defeat, Hitler, an Austrian, was able to use his persuasive skills to brain wash the Germans into believing that a minority was the cause of all their problems.
However, Japan would still be hell bent on invading China and later bombing Pearl Habour. Their ambitions went unchecked after their success of World War I, being an ally of the US. Japan seized Germany’s Micronesian colonies and after Battle of Tsingtao, the German coaling port of Qingdao, in the Chinese Shandong peninsula.

First was inevitable there were alot of reasons and the protagonists wanted a war so bad they needed little provacation.
the second was directly caused by the treaty of Versaille and the conditions of the German surrender. They would have had no motivation for war and Hitler could not have risen to power.

the first world war was inevitable....everyone overreacted to the (then) new German state. the second could have been avoided by realising why the first happened, and rying to include Germany in the powers of Europe instead of excluding and oppressing them, and inadvertantly sending them into hyperinflation and mass poverty! ( the breeding ground for fascism)

ww2 could have been averted if the french had have invaded germany in 1936.also the treaty with poland was not feasible as too far away to defend. we now see the french german eec partnership blooming and the uk having to decide whether to stay in or leave.
