In the American culture, the progression of liberalism is fueled by the support of groups who advocate homosexuality, Atheism, abortion, public education free from Judeo-Christian influence (but not necessarily free from Islam, Buddhism, Hindu or other influences) and a variety of other causes which are opposed by the morals championed by the conservative movement which is allied to the religious right dominated by Christian and Jewish principles.
So, from the liberal point of view, the friend of my enemy is my enemy. Since Christians and Jews hold beliefs that by large conform to conservatism, and since conservatism is the enemy of liberalism. The liberals tend to attack the religious as a result.
Furthermore, religions maintain a strict definition of what is right and what is wrong. Liberalism holds that what may be wrong for one person is not necessarily wrong for another person. Religion believes that there is an absolute truth and teach that certain behaviors are intolerable. Liberalism does not like for people to tell them that something that they are doing is wrong.
It is not a matter of them being the biggest.......well, you know, but a matter of them lashing out at against what they perceive as a threat to their way of life.
In closing, one might wonder why they don't just ignore religious people who try to show them the error of their ways. Why do they feel the need to bash religious people?
I submit that it is for their own sense of comfort. Deep down they know what they are defending is wrong. That stirs feelings of guilt within them and they feel the need to lash out. What easier target than a group of forgiving, loving and generally peaceful people?
Do not let them get you down. The battle has already been won; the victory is assured. Keep spreading the Word. Who knows, the Holy Spirit may yet convict them in their hearts and draw them to the Son.
