I have a new picture that I just bought to hang above my couch. I am not sure to center it with the couch because it does not move and nor can it ever be moved because of the size and design of my living room. My other option is to center it with the a wall that is quite long, but because my house is a split bi-level the wall is on the same side as the entrance way and there is a railing there to divide the entrance and the living room. so I was thinking that I could center it on the wall but only center it between the railing and the other wall. I am not sure what the rule of thumb is. Hope someone can help me!!

What you want to do is create a focal point, a place in the room that draws the eye and is interesting to look at. By centering it on the couch you are achieving two things: a focal point to draw the eye and a focal point that calls you to relax on the couch. If the picture is taller than it is wide, hang the picture off center of the couch and add two more objects to the wall for interest (always display items in groups of odd numbers ie: 1, 3 or 5 items grouped together). If, however the picture is wider that it is tall, center it on the couch. Hang the picture so that when you are standing, the center of the picture is just a little above eye level.

I prefer center it with the couch also. My husband prefers to center it on the wall. I cant! I hate that look. It looks off balance. LOL

Just hang it adove the couch that your friends can sit and see it
isn't it beautiful enough.

i center with the couch, if not it would drive me crazy !
