My 31 y.o. niece has been sick for almost a year. She's unemployed, due to her illness, and almost homeless. She's applied for medi-cal but was turned down because she's over 18 and under 55. The emergency room won't see her because it's a chronic health problem (possibly lupus or rheumotoid arthritis). The family has been paying her bills but we're running out of money. How can she get the treatment she needs?
Please no rude answers about her situation. It's not like she enjoys living in poverty. She's ill.

We should have a system where nobody has to worry about critical care. Our so called advancements in medicine are really bringing us to the brink of inhumanity. What good is it if people really in need can't afford all the great technology? It's a culture of greed, because despite the high cost, even the medical professionals want theirs. Not long ago the nurses in my area went on strike because an $80,000 salary wasn't enough.

Times like these families need to pull together and sacrifice. It's late, but thinking ahead with things like disability insurance helps. You should try to contact some social services agencies for some kind of direction. Maybe even your local or state rep can get cracking on some relief and help from the state agencies. What about social security disability?

Worst case, she will get really sick and you will have no choice but to bring her in the emergency door.

i don't know what "country" you are talking about, but... generally speaking, there should be foundations for less-priviledged people that are willing to help out in such cases. you can also find our what organization has been dedicating their work in the study of your niece's illness, and maybe they can help to. another option is to go to a politician who is working on laws/bills such as healthcare (or one who is just desperate for media attention and would love the possibility of being features as "the one with a good heart" -- yes, there are politicians who are like that!). there are options, but they're all going to take time and effort to get to them. just look around you, ask around. good luck.
