Sorry about how long this is, I usually don't answer nearly this much.

Before we the earth was formed, Heavenly Father presented a plan for us, that we would come to earth, gain a body, have important learning experiences, and eventually die. We would be free to choose how we lived, but if we chose to live true to whatever light and knowledge we received on earth, we would have great reward in Heaven and peace while on the earth. We had learned as much as we could without a body, and needed to advance in experience and maturity.

Jesus Christ offered to come to pay the price for the sins and mistakes that we would make, and, if we accepted his terms, be able to come back after being cleaned by his sacrifice and paying the price for our wrongs. We would be able to be resurrected and receive perfected bodies at some time after our deaths.

Satan was also there and offered to take the job too, but he thought he was smarter than Heavenly Father. He wanted to tell everyone what to do. Then he would take God's place, because if God was making a mistake, Satan was the right one for the job.

Jesus was chosen. Satan would not take no for an answer, led a rebellion against God and eventually was sent away forever. He and others who followed him are here on the earth, except that we cannot usually see them. He continues that rebellion today.

I wouldn't say that he is the king, that would be giving him some kind of credit like he did something great at one point. He was damned by God Himself after trying to branch off with several angels that thought they could over rule the almighty. He was the leader of the rebels and that is how he received the title of satan, lucifer and so on.

He thought himself better than the God who created him. He revolted and rebelled against God. He took many angels with him in this revolt and enticed man to sin, thus causing their relationship with God to suffer. God gave him dominion over the earth for only a short time (by God's standards), and then will cast him into hell where he can rule in eternal suffering and separation from God all he wants. It will be no picnic for him, I can tell you that. Many people choose to do the very thing that Satan did - they mock God and think themselves better than God. It's sad when they do that because unlike simply not believing in God, which in itself is sad, to openly mock Him and think themselves better than God is to seal one's own doom. I have seen so many people in these forums who do that, and it truly is sad.
