There are some dvd players that can playback both hd or blu-ray. But not all have this ability.

I would suggest holding back on purchasing a HD/Blu-Ray Player for now. Both are new competing technologies and it's too soon to know which will become mainstream. If you already have a DVD player, just use that for the time being for your system (if not you can get decent players real cheap). Unless you desperately need it, just give it some time and you'll be making a better decision (and saving yourself some money!).

Not unless the player specifically states so. Blu-Ray and HD-DVD are different formats. And as such, they have different players. As was stated in an earlier answer, there will be some combo players out on the market soon.

No they cannot at this point. Samsung is actually coming out with the Blu-Ray/HD player in the near future. Goodluck!

i agree now is not the time to buy hd or blue ray, in fact first gen blue ray has known issues (screen freezing and stutter effects).. i would suggest a good upconverting dvd player. for about $500 ( nearly half the cost of BR) denon has one that upconverts to 1080p and it looks good, not as clear as blue ray, but without the issues and headaches.
