She cleaned her teeth and visited dentist as a small girl but was bullied at school about her teeth which were quite big. Since then she's found it harder and harder to cope with cleaning them or visiting dentist. Not frightened of dentists as such but her hands sweat and she begins to panic if she talks about them etc. Her teeth need urgent attention and I don't know how to help her get over this.

like with any phobia there is help out there.
There are therapists that can help with phobia no matter what is the reason for it. I'm guessing hers is not because she was traumatized by dentist, that should make it easier for her to get over than.
We see a lot of patients who had a bad experience as children and it takes time and effort on both sides to work it out. You just need to want it.

Try hypnotherapy dont know how well off you are coz they can cost in the region of 80 quid a go roughly . If not try the gradual approach talk to the dentist about the problem(they are very understanding) tell your daughter that you are going to the dentist for a visit but you dont go in just to the door --next you go in another day but just into the foyer--next you go into the waiting roon for a short while then go home --next you go into the dentist and chat but he does nothing-- next visit go through all the sequences and possibly your daughter has made it.OR collect as many pictures of toothles or decayed mouths you can find and try the scare tactics.or tell her you will give her lots of money if she goes. there, ive run out of ideas now. good luck xx

Hi..really do sympathise with you and your daughter have been there and although am not completely cured can now accept. My suggestion to you is in two parts, firstly find a good hypnotherapy CD referring to dental pobia then depending where you are in country a dentist that has an clinic attached that practices sedation and deep sleep techniques. Can recommemd a clinic in hampshire that is good if that helps. God luck.

Bless y'all. In GA and PA and I am certain in many or ALL states of this great country...there are medical and dental colleges that will perform what you may need...at a minimal cost. And the class is guided by a professional Doctor...or DMD...whatever...just Yahoo or Google search your local area for this type of treatment. They WILL perform cosmetic surgery as well....
I hope this helps. She's 24! She is a lady, a grown woman....if she needs help, by ALL meens help her.
God Bless.

Buy her some over the counter calming pills and tell her she has to go or they will get worse and then she may have to have more work done.
Tell her she is no longer a small child and that she needs to go.
Sometimes you have to be a little bit hard ( but not to hard)

do check for information on the website of :
THE SOCIETY FOR THE STUDY OF CRANIO MANDIBULAR JOINT DISORDER, the information and my personal experience with my daughter's severe dental problem l was only helped because of finding someone who understood and more so was capable and had the knowledge on how to help my daughter where for nearly 2 years of unbearable pains the NHS dental professionals failed to help her
Do your homework before agreeing to any treatment and explore all possible options.
