This question was brought up the other day and was wandering what other views people would have on it

If/When we(as a human race) make contact with an alien species; would you try to convert them to your religion/beliefs? What if they come from a society that is polytheist, and represent a Greek/Roman type of belief system, would you be tolerant of their beliefs?

Looking for real/thought provoking answers only.

No, even though they are aliens I wouldn't not push any religion on anyone or anything. However, if the alien seemed interested in my beliefs I might take the alien to church with me and let them decide for them-self.

As for their beliefs, I do not judge people for their faith or beliefs, however, I would ask for the same respect I give them and that's not force, or push or even preach their beliefs to me unless I ask for them to.

I think everyone's first reaction would be just shock.

After that, religious types would probably have a debate about whether the aliens in fact have souls.

Those that decide they have souls and who are the hardcore religious types would likely start missionary, outreach, etc. activity to convert them.

This is the same pattern followed when "natives" and "savages" were discoverd in Africa, North America, the Amazon, etc.

PS - since much of religion is obviously human-focused, it would be very interesting to see the debate, in Christianity at least, about whether Jesus died for the aliens' sins, too, or just "man's" sins.

PPS - religions that believe in reincarnation would have an issue, as well. Do humans and aliens cross-reincarnate? If so, who has been an alien in the past, and vice versa, and why didn't we know?

Well, of course I would try to get them to understand and convert to my religion. That is what I am trying to do with so many. As a Christian I feel that it is my obligation to save as many souls as possible before my body leaves this earth. That does not mean that I would ambush an alien species the second that they began contact with the human race and I would not shove it down their throats either. (If they had any. LOL) Before I began explaining my beliefs and thoughts I would want to hear theirs. Maybe in some way one or two things would sort of add up.

If or when we make contact with aliens and they have certain beliefs apart from my religion I would defiantly not try to make the believe in my religion. I think that's just stupid and people, no matter where the come from, have a right to believe what they want. I will never try to sway someone one way. Everyone has their own beliefs and I respect that. If an alien had a completely different view on life I would listen and try to understand and if he wants to listen to me about my religion that's fine with me.

If these beings you speak of are sociable beings our species would without a doubt try to convert the aliens. I wouldn't ;considering my beliefs on God and everything else differ so much from most others'. Depending on if their beliefs are peaceful I could possibly stay out of their business. However, if their beliefs have anything to do with harming someone of our species or their own I would have to speak up.

If I/we were to make contact with space aliens, I would want to sit down and learn from them about their culture and world. I would hope a reasonably intelligent exchange of thoughts and ideas would happen. I would not try to convert them.

Of course, if they are aliens from across the boder, I would shoot first and ask questions later. Their are currently an estimated 12 million illegal aliens here and that's more than we need. Want a better life -- come here legally!!!

I will be very tolerent of any potential alien species with a different system of belief & would not force my beliefs on anyone. Ive converted more people to cristianity by not bible bashing but by practising what the bible preaches.

A very thought provoking question.
I am assuming that the Aliens will have arrived with 'something' of their own. Maybe they would come with one belief system that could possibly unite us all?
Why not?

IF such a scenario were to become possible at some future date - I would hope they would be enlightened unbelievers.

I think we would be damn lucky if they didn't follow the human example and seek to convert us all to their cultural beliefs through violence, if necessary.

I'm not surprised that some folks answering this question say that proselytizin' is their purpose in life and they would have to convert the heathen extraterrestrials. Lots o' luck with that...

Jesus teaches it best in the Holy Bible. Teach the truth and if they don't believe brush the dust from your feet, and move on.

He says nothing about persecuting someone for not believing - it's their choice.

Of course there are those who believe they are too intelligent to believe in such things like God - it would have to come from someone from another planet, or from apes or the like.

They would be the same ones that don't believe in documented history that tells of the life Of Jesus, and how he was crucified for no good reason accept to fulfill a prophecy written in the Old Testament.
