The reason they are bad for you is the amount of sugar and caffeine contained in them.
If you are concerned about your health (obviously your mom is), then you and your mom should consider an alternative energy drink.
I drink an energy drink that does not contain all of the sugar and caffeine. It works in 10-15 minutes after I drink it, it lasts for several hours, and is much less expensive than those other energy drinks.
You can find them at www.carlshealthhelp.com/energy.
The website also has a picture of the sugar that is in the most popular energy drinks. You may be surprised when you see that!
You may also start thanking your mom!

The outrageuous amount of caffeine in energy drinks makes a cup of coffee or tea seem harmless in comparison. I can't believe you haven't heard about the various college kids who ended up at the emergency room from drinking too many of them trying to stay awake to study.
Too much caffeine raises your heart rate, sometimes to a dangerous level. At the least, people experience anxiety, and at the worst, they can actually damage their hearts.
Another bad thing about caffeine is it takes the calcium from your bones. A cup or two of coffee or tea per day is not going to do much, but those overloaded energy drinks might.
So listen to your mom. She's right this time. Also, some of the companies that make these drinks are catching on to the problem finally and making low-caffeine or zero-caffeine versions, so look for those in stores.

Well, with me being a parent and being addicted to caffeine I will tell you my views on caffeine and you can take it how you like. I was never told I couldn't have a soft drink or tea as a child, therefore I crave caffeine and when I don't have caffeine, I get horrible headaches and get very irritable. Not only that, I don't drink enough water. I don't allow my children to drink sodas or tea unless it is for a treat maybe once every few months and then it is a very little amount. They are 8 and 11 years old. I don't want my children having an addiction to caffeine like I have. I feel that once you become dependent on one thing, it is easy to become dependent on other things, such as smoking or drinking. But, that is just my thoughts and I will continue to think that way if I feel I am helping my children.

Energy drinks are not bad for you. Too many a day of ANYTHING is bad. You are just fine. You are not addicted if you are drinking one a day. That is just silly. A medium cup of Starbucks coffee has just much caffeine.
