I had to take 2 years of any of 6 languages in high school. I chose Spanish, as I felt it would be the most useful. I continued with 4 more years of it in college (8 full semesters), and I'm glad I did. I speak English always, but there have been a few moments when I've been glad to understand what other people around me were saying. And, its great if you need to communicate with someone who doesn't speak English - ie, tourists, etc. It comes in handy in the working world, too. Romance languages are neat - once you are fluent in one, its rather simple to at least get the gist of the others - French, Portuguese, Italian, etc.

If you're anti-Spanish language, take French. Then, when you go to France you will be a great source of amusement. I speak deplorable French, understandable but limited Spanish and some Italian. Learning any new language will be helpful all your life. Don't be stubborn.

I think it's important to learn ANY foreign language in shcool, just because it makes you a more well rounded person & helps you understand your own language better.

I also think that we should welcome immigrants into our society with open arms as long as they come here legally and are an asset to our country.

BUT, I have to agree with you. When our ancestors immigrated here, they had to learn English and since that is what we speak, current immigrants should have to, too. Look, if you come here looking for a better way of life, good for you, I'm happy to put some tax dollars toward bettering your life, but if you get a job at McDonalds, I want to be able to understand what the heck you are saying! Immigrants should be required to learn English! It's only fair!

IMHO

You are required to learn Spanish? In my high school there was a general foreign language requirement.

u dont required to learn spanish, u can take italian, german, french, watever ur school offers. in my school, we dont have to take spanish, but we gotta take at least 2 years of a foreign language. learning a new language makes u more of a cultural person, which i bet u dont care. colleges also look at that kinda stuff, n so do employers. if u dont wanna take spanish in high school, then take a different language.

All students are required to take a foriegn language to graduate. It doesnt have to be spanish, dont be ignorant. They have been teaching a second language in schools for years. It is to help educate our children.

I always have gotten paid minimum $4.00 per hour MORE just because i am bi-lingual. Education in whatever form is what matters, dont you think?

If I recall correctly it is a requirement that you take a foreign language to graduate. Listen, if you don't like Spanish don't take it. Quit your nagging. If your school doesn't offer any other language then contact your school district. They should be able to help you.

So that you can make more money and be able to communicate with more people.
For your own good. The bottom line is that if you don't want to learn it, try to change schools, but when you grow up and are job-hunting you will be SORRY :(

I'm going to be making about $500 more a month, just because I can speak Spanish.

It was also easier for me to learn French (which I finally got to use in Paris last Christmas).
