Surgical nurses work in the OR along with surg techs. Med/surg nurses work the floor where the post opertive patients stay until they're ready to go home. Their nurses are responsible for monitoring their condition to make sure that no internal bleeding or infections have developed. It's a specialty because not every nurse needs to monitor the sign and symptoms of post-op shock which can kill quickly and you need someone skilled enough to know when to call the doctor. Next time you leave a hospital healthy, thank your nurses.

med/surg nurses DON'T help in surgery, that's an OR or scrub nurse! med/surg is a type of unit, that receives pts before and after a general surgery ( anything other than a cardiac or orthopedic surgery) and they get patients with a broad range of issues. Basically, if they aren't in ICU, ortho, cardiac or a step down unit, they are on med/surg. It's a specialty because the nurses need to be knowledgeable with a very wide range of ailments.

The med/surge nurse is the one who prepares the surgical implements for surgery. They are also the ones who have to know in an instant what implement the doctor asks for in order to hand it to them. They also are in charge of implement inventory after surgery. Knowing all the implements, their proper names and uses is extremely crucial and a very intrical part of any successful surgical team.

they assist surgeons---longer hours, faster paced work, more responsibility, more things to know/remember, more serious issues etc....
thus, higher status and more money
