I've had issues with this off and on. For me, it is an expression of depression and/or OCD. SSRI's really help with this.
Security issues also play a role in my case. My mother wouldn't take me to the doctor for anything as a child because she was always worried about money, and I was always worried about dying from some unknown illness. Plus, she seemed not to care when I was sick. She was selfish. She labeled me a hypochondriac herself.
Once I was on my own, had my own health insurance and support of my wonderful husband, I really had little worries about my health other than what was really to be concerned about. Then, after 30, I realized health problems are an inevitable part of growing old, and I just figured I would fight every health challenge I was faced with. I used this strategy recently, when I had a biopsy on some atypical cells in my breast. Before I even got the result, I decided I would be a champion for breast cancer sufferers or survivors if the outcome was bad. My result turned out ok, but I turned my worry into something positive to focus on.
Above all, prayer, faith and anticipation of afterlife in heaven where there is no illness or death comforts me when these situations arise.

Well, I have been fine for the past few months and can go years without worrying about my health. But I also noticed that when I have an outbreak and get really scared about something, its directly proportional to other stress in my life.
It's all about stress relief. How you do that is up to you to find out. Working out, getting enough sleep, eating right, being with people/family that make you happy, etc, etc.
Also, never google. If you are a true hypochondriac you know what I'm talking about.

My ugly mother in law was a hypochondriac and died according to her profession. We tolerated the medicine cabinet in the kitchen cupboard...
First off grab a brown bag and march to pharmacy and talk to pharmacist. Take each day one at a time and limit your outlook on what is wrong to I am improving myself by
