Like, when you die what's going to happen to your spirit? here's a story that i know and how i know that spirits exist:
my grandpa was a very heavy smoker. one day, because of that, he had a heart attack. he was on his bed when he died. the people rushed in and did the electric paddles. while they were doing that, he said that he felt his spirit come out of his body and turn over and the spirit him saw his body below and all the doctors working on it. he then saw a dark tunnel and a light at the end of it and he wanted so badly to go to that tunnel. then they did the electric paddles and he was shot back into his body and now he's fine. that proves that there's spirits right?

I can't nor would I want to speak for all Atheists but this one doesn't.

Oxygen deprivation to the brain can cause some very weird and seemingly real hallucinations. All you need do is go through an altitude chamber to realize that tunnels and all that stuff is just your imagination. In military fighter type aircraft pilots sometimes do a trick called GLOC. It is pronoundced "G Lock" and stands for Gravity Loss Of Conscienceness. The aircraft is loaded with positive G's until the blood starts draining from your brain. A tunnel appears and there is normally a light at the end of it unless you are doing this silly stuff at night.

I hate to have to be the one to tell you the truth, and I am certain it won't change your beliefs but that doesn't make it any less true.

There ain't no spirits.

Your grandfather's story is typical of the stories many people who've faced death come back to tell. Although it's comforting, it's not exactly solid proof of a spirit or afterlife. Some scientists argue the experience is that of a dying brain.

Having said that, there's always the 2nd Law of Thermodynamics which suggests energy cannot be destroyed - it will only change forms. If that's true, then it follows that a person's energy (heat, electro-chemical and magnetic, to name a few) will continue to exist in another form. Religious people call this a spirit and expect to go to heaven - possibly. Atheists (some, anyway) are comfortable with the fact that we simply don't know what happens after death.

Personally, I reject the idea of God or heaven or hell, but I think everything moves on. Everything. Even a rock, because it too is energy. Personal belief only, no proof.

Hi,
I'm so happy to hear that your Grandpa made it, and in my opinion yes there are definitely spirits! Bad spirits and good spirits, and it sounds like your grandpa came face to face with some good spirits.
Most importantly, let your Grandpa know how very much you love him- he may not have too much time left, this may have been a warning because even though he doesn't believe in God- God believes in him, and accepts him for what he has done through life. Only in God's time, will your grandfather be taken from this world.

You make the choice if you believe in them or not. I believe there is a god or higher power of some sort. There are spirits and demons, whether you believe in them or not, they are here. Science cannot prove everything, people just think people are crazy when they say "i saw a ghost". I think they shrug it off and try to avoid it. Most people do this when they see something they can't explain.

Everyone has their own opinion on this matter though. I guess we will find the truth when we die(hope that isn't soon).

Humans have no spirit. We only have a self realization of existence. We are are matter just like everything else in the universe. When we die our matter/energy dissipates back into the universe from where we came. It's a constant eb and flo of energy.

Too general - there are too many of us for a single answer. But for *me*, there are *no* spirits and *no* supernatural at all. OOB experiences are common and prove nothing whatsoever. With the lack of oxygen to the brain under gramp's situation, some hallucination is not unreasonable.

No. It proves the mind is a very powerful thing.

Atheists generally do not believe in anything for which there is no evidence (good evidence, that is), and spirits would be counted in that category.

Atheists do not believe in things they cannot see. They need solid proof before they even consider believing in something. So my answer is no.

And if they do believe in spirits, doesn't that kind of debunk atheism? Isn't God a spirit?

No, I don't believe in it. Furthermore, what grandpa experienced was most likely a neurophysiological process, which can be induced through stimulation of the temporal lobe. In other words, he didn't have enough oxygen and too much carbon dioxide.

"that proves that there's spirits right?"

Oh, how I want to believe you're kidding. You're not serious, are you?

I don't believe in spirits. I think most atheists - probably a vast majority - don't either.
