It seems possible to me, as donkeys and horses, produce mules.........

It is impossible. Humans and apes have a different number of chromosomes and any human with an unpaired chromosome would not be viable. I'm sure if there were a way to seperate the chromosomes and somehow make it so that the offspring got the full extra pair from the parent it could be done but such a process would be extremely complicated and probably wouldn't work.

Donkeys and horses are different species from the same genus; humans and other apes are from different genera as well as different species, and therefore cannot reproduce
So I guess Ann Darrow can throw out her diaphragm...

The DNA is smilier as we split off the same DNA. Not currently possible. You will see how it could be done in Michael Crichton's" book "Next" It deals with some of your questions, even if it is fiction.

I don't think the DNA is close enough.

Evolution is misrepresented sometimes. We did not evolve from modern day apes. Both species evolved from the same ancestors separately.

Why would anyone even want to make a half ape half human? To improve the ape? Or to diminish the Human?What is the point?

Not by natural means, no. Human and primate reproductive material is not compatible.

NO, our DNA is incompatible with theirs.
Mules are a hybrid species, not able to normally reproduce their own kind.
