My dog is a 1 year old pitbull boxer who I have had since he was 3 months old. He is trained to go to the door and bark or whine when he has to go outside, but recently he has started doing "number 2" in my living room with no warning or whining, just squatting and going. He doesn't have diarreha so I don't think it is an urgent thing. Could this be a behavior problem and if so what sparked it and what do I do to change it?

This sounds a lot like a behavioral problem - but I would get a stool sample to your vet just in case. Fecal tests are inexpensive, and it's better to be safe about things like this.

If it is behavioral there can be several factors that could cause this. Dogs can be temperamental sometimes. Has anything changed in your household? New family members or roommates? New carpets or furniture? He may be trying to assert himself (though this is usually done with urine) in the household as an "adult" male. Is he neutered?

You may want to consider "retraining" your dog while you sort out the problem. Crate training is a great way of reinforcing good behavior.

If you decide against a fecal sample, I still suggest calling your vet and asking about the behavior. They can't charge you for making a call and asking some questions - you can only benefit from it.

hmm, dogs can be tricky like that. could be he just needs some re-training as to the dos and don'ts of potty training. he is still only a year old and they can need some reinforcement of the rules. he could be being deliberately disobedient, ie. taking some of the control of the house away from you--is he spoiled in any way otherwise? i mean, does he get away with things? maybe he's testing you. just be firm and pretend like you have to train him all over again. if nothing works, see a vet.

It could be a way to get your attention. Try 1/2 hour walks every day. Are you answering the dogs barks right away?

His he creight trained, if not get him trained...he is a young dog and training a young dog tsakes time..He could forget what was tought to him...Stay on a schedule, don't worry about him telling you he needs to go..make a schedule and take him out the same time every day...Has the dog gets oldertheir bladder gets a better handle on things...

This is totaly fix-able...

Good luck..

I have a two year old Black Lab.....She is the love of my life...My wife is second...LOL

if he's not on a feeding schedule, put him on one. That way you will be able to tell when he needs to go. Leave him outside until he goes. Do not give him snacks or treats inbetween or else he will poop anyway. My Italian Greyhound has to be on a schedule or else he will poop in the house because he is well, stupid and has no sense to keep his home clean.

It could be anxiety. If you had a new houseguest (a new pet or a new baby, for example) it could cause your puppy to revert. Check with your vet to make sure it isn't another problem.
