Basically, my girlfriend and I are considerring getting married. The complication is that she is not from America and we would want to live in America together, at least for a few years. If we do not marry the next time we return to America, it is unlikely we will get another chance for a while. I know all about green card marriages, and how they grant citizenship, but what I don't know is the law. Is there something that would be preventing me from marrying her if we just walked into a chapel? Thanks for answerring!

You can marry her any time you want, regardless of immigration status, but marrying her will not guarantee her to be able to stay in the US. You can wait to get married and file Form I-129 "Petition for Alien Fiance" while she is in her home country. The petition will take 6-9 months for approval and you must marry her within 90 days of her arrival in the US. If you get married now, she will have to return to her home country and you will then file Form I-130 "Petition for Alien Relative" which takes 9 months to a year for approval. Once approved she will enter the US as a conditional permanent resident and will be given her Green Card.

u can get married very easily in the US all u need to do is get a marriage license in your state & both of u will need some ID and u can definitely get married in a chapel or church of ur choice but it will only be legal via a marriage cerificate. u wont have any problems for the marriage certif. good luck! keep in mind this wont make ur spouse a citizen & she can still be deported for any reason.

You can be legally married by any judge. Simply having a ceremony doesn't make the marriage legally binding in a court of law.

Nothing to prevent you from marrying her however that doesn't mean you can stay here legally. There is red tape to go through. Sorry even if your girlfriend was a us citizen you would still have to go through red tape and order to get a visa so you can stay here.
