Me and my boyfriend live together in a small apartment, and he wanted a dog, so he got a miniature American Eskimo puppy which, when grown will be 18 to 20 lbs. anyway , she is now 4 months old, very smart, knows tricks, and follows him around everywhere. However she acts to him like he is the pack leader, and when i take her out side she wont listen to me, and inside if he is not there she will growl and completely not listen to me at all, whether i spank he her or anything. When i spank her when she beats up the cat or is bad, she just looks at me like 'who the #**@ do you think you are. I am nice to her, and pet her and everything. How ever to him she acts wonderful. Would taking her to obedience classes help since she will have to learn to obey other people other then him? I have never really seen a dog this small that only recognizes one person as the 'pack leader' and no one else. What should I do?

I dont beat her. Jeez When she is bad my boyfriend spanks her a lot more and a lot harder then i do. We are not beating her with a stick ok? I ONLY do it when she attacks my cat again and again and wont stop with just a verbal 'No". she is twice the size of my kitten.

I agree with DP -- spanking the dog isn't going to make her respect you. it will only breed fear and mistrust.

I do think that *you* (not your BF) taking her to obedience classes would help your relationship. Working with a trainer will help you solve your "differences", and getting her to respond to your commands will help you establish your place over her in your pack.

I would definitely recommend this -- if you commit to working on obedience with her on a daily basis, it will definitely improve your relationship.

Good luck!

ADDED: Spanking her, regardless of how little or how "light", will still not fix this problem. It will most likely just make her hand-shy. You may want to try a squirt bottle to solve the cat problem -- set it to "stream" and squirt her when she's misbehaving/ignoring you. The water is harmless (but most dogs don't like it much), and your hands aren't the bad guy. Couple this with a stern command.

by hitting your dog you have taught her that it is ok to be physical. Dont be surprised when she bites you.

Seek Obedience training immediately while she is a puppy before a problem develops. Remember during the training that your boyfriend should NOT undermine you. If you ask for a command, he should not step in and correct the behavior, then why should she listen to you?

Ceasar Milan-The Dog Whisperer
Watch his shows and read his books. You will learn everything you need to know from this man. For now though, don't spank the dog. You are showing her negativity and she is taking it out on your cat. Do your best to keep calm and educate yourself. Letting this go any longer can actually put this dog into a constant agressive mode.

I suggest going to an obedience class & buying a water botlle that sprays water in a hard/fast line, spray the dog when hes doign something bad & don't say no, us e a sound thats loud & annoying adn say annnt. Try also getting the dog's attention with treats.

watch cesar milan's show, a lot, and maybe take her to an obedience class; places like PetSmart even have free ones, I think. other than that, just be firm, and try not to pet her when she is misbehaving. and not to radiate any kind of nervousness or uncertainty around her. also, make sure your boyfriend backs you up whenever you are trying to interact with the dog. if he doesn't support you, she will take her cues from him, and that will make it even harder for you to have a healthy relation with your dog.

If you really want to train him.
Go to google and find out.
If not you can spend money on training, but I think it's fun doing training yourself...
Good luck..!

Yes, taking her to class yourself and learning to communicate with her should help.
