I have a few bird houses to hang outside. How far away should I have bird feeders and baths from the houses? Should I put any straw, sticks, or anything in the empty houses to start them off?

In general there are specific houses for specific bird species. What I recommend is find out what kind of bird will use the houses that you purchased, then what you can do is find out by google searching what the parameters are for the houses. Just like there are different houses for different birds they like to be in different places and different heights, i.e. Black Phoebes love to be near moving water like a fountain that is always on or a backyard pond with a pump so the water is in motion, they also nest under a overhang. What I have done is, I bought a platform type nest "box" thought it isn't a box and I hung it on my house under an eve that was adjacent to my fountain. Because Black Phoebes don't mind nesting where humans are present you can hang the platform on or near your home. If you need more help e-mail me via my Answers profile and I will be glad to help---Good luck with everything, if you can encourage birds to nest on you property it is a wonderful sight to see.

put the baths between the bird houses so that they will be easily acessable. make sure that they are aslo far enough away from the houses that the birds wont feel like thei space is being invaded. do the same thing with the bird houses. dont put sticks or anything inside the houses. birds are very particular about how they build their nests. different kinds of birds also use different materials and ways of constructing the nests. they also wont use the houses if they smell your scent on the sticks.

The closer to the trees you hang your feeder, the more likely the birds will use them. Be sure to not hang them around any glass windows to assure that birds will not fly into glass if they see a reflection and believe it's another bird!

You can hang a feeder upon your porch, but do it where the feeder is not too close to human hang-outs. The feeder does not need any twigs, etc. in it, but I recommend that you assure it stays in a dry place if possible. I have one that gets wet and clogs up the food. I need to remedy that situation. It affects the food inside, which in turn, affects the edibility of the food.

are you hoping they will live in them? there is sure no guarantee of that; all you can do is hang them out there and hope i guess. at first i thought you were going to feed them, but getting them to live in them, i have no idea. you could just try to place them in various locations, near and far from the house, and wait and see!
