People actualy think banning these dogs is a good thing......are you serious? sounds like a bunch of biased BS to me! The top three reasons being:

1.Pit bulls have an average score tested by the American temperament society that beats even the "ultimate family dog", the Golden Retriever.

2.Pit Bulls are no more dangerous than any strong and large dog. They just happen to attract more irresponsible and abusive owners than any other breed.

3. A breed ban will only remove Pit Bulls from good people's homes and leave them in the hands of animal abusers who couldn't care less about the law.

So tell me, what is banning the breed gonna help? I have two pits and they're just big babies. I have never had such loyal dogs. Pit Bulls adore to please their loved ones and respond very well to positive reinforcement. They are intelligent dogs, who easily make associations. They can be a lot of fun to train and often do very well in obedience competitions.

OK Greekman, I think environment is actualy the keyword. What your saying is that these genetics are both physical and mental........I think not! Sure they're bred to be muscular but you cant breed mean. Your saying if you took the two meanest people on earth and they mated that automaticly makes their offspring buck nuttie. NO WAY! not if they grew up away from their mean parents in a good home right. Think about it, do you and your parents see eye to eye at all times and do everything the same(sports,hobbies,likes,dislikes,FIGHTING)...NO! You are your own individual (just like dogs) and most of your mental characteristics came from your environment.....not your genetics.

BSL has already been proven to not work. There is not a single case of it actually being effective. It is all based on ignorance. A good example is Boulder Colorado. They banned pit bulls even though labs were the #1 biter in theri area. Their bite/attack statistics have not dropped but have increased.
Those for BSL dont understand the fact that any dog can be dangerous. It is only a matter of time before they add just about every medium to large sized dog to the list.

I would just like to add, someone mentioned that pits bred for fighting are low to the ground. This is not true. They are usually tall and lanky. A dog shorter to the ground would have to work harder than a taller dog and would run out of air faster. The taller they are the more athletic they are likely to be. Take a look at some of the old time gamedogs... Jeep, Hunter Red, Dirty Mary, Reno.... They are all tall and lanky.

Greekman... APBTs are not bred for their aggressiveness to other dogs but for gameness.
Something that way too many people believe that is a complete myth is that APBTs are trained to fight. They are not and they cannot be forced if they dont want to.
Bloodlines do play a big part in breeding dogs. If you breed a dog that shows aggression towards people chances are very high that the pups will be people aggressive as well (which is why people mean APBTs are culled.
Traits are passed down through breeding which is why you sometimes see a herding dog that has never been trained to herd, herd, and a pointer that has never been trained to point game out will point at the robin in your tree.

My moto - "there is no such thing as a bad dog, just bad dog owners". I don't own a pit, but I love them and agree with every thing you said.

Just a comment to the guy who responded and works at the shelter and has to put all pits down, I would quit on principle. I know the bans make it difficult, but even the ASPCA in New York City have a policy of rehabilitation and adoption. There is also the Out Of the Pits rescue and Best Friends in Utah, (all no kill shelters) not to mention many other pit rescues all over the country. There are always options for true animal loving "shelters", and I question those that kill because it takes less work.

i completely agree that pits are the main candy and loving canines. i purely cant the undesirable rep they get. properly u can confer with sturdy pit bull breeders and learn suitable to the breed. and circulate to borders or the library and look at some books.additionally c if there's a pit bull rescue in ur section. communicate the the folk there and that they must have some relatively sturdy information and maybe they might even enable u foster one. if there isn't any group like that c if u ought to foster the dogs u want. c if u 2 would be a sturdy tournament. additionally while adopting a pitbull save somethings in suggestions. if united states in an house or renting a house c if u r allowed to get a pit bull. maximum aparts dont enable it whether the dogs is great candy and dogs friendly.and a few coverage compaines wont artwork with u if u have a pit. additionally some counties/cities dont enable them the two and in the event that they locate one they are going to the two placed it to sleep or each and every so often if the pit is fortunate they gets right into a rescue.

Once more, I do not care about pit bulls, one way or the other. I would not want to see them banned because I am sure something else would follow. the problem i have is when people make the general statement that that all pitts are innocent and it's the owners........That is pure horse crap. A dog, just like a human, is the product of its genetics and its environment, genetics being the key word here. What people fail to understand is that pit bulls were bred for fighting other animals, it's GENETICALLY in them, and given thr opportunity to fight, will do so. Of course we humans have also done our part by getting in there and breed all sorts of crap that should have been put down instead. The bottom line is this. Quit blaming just people as if it's all their fault, consider the dog's backround too. The way you make it sound is too one sided. Dogs also screw up.

Cook, thank you for thr comments, but, you are wrong. You are comparing apples and oranges, humans are NOT the same as dogs. Breeding dogs is a science. Breeders have and compare pedigrees of different dogs so they can bring 2 dogs together that will best REPRODUCE the traits they want to see and preserve. That is the whole point of breeding. Breeders do not play crap shoot with their dogs. If that was the case you would have no predictability in anything that was ever bred. Yes, you can breed aggressivenes just like you can breed for certain other traits like size and color and temperament. It is genetics that the dog comes into this world with, the environment will SHAPE these genetics, but they are either there or they are not. As an example, I look for certain specific things in my dogs, things like pack drive and dominance and size and aggression etc because of what I need from the dog. I get these dogs from specific bloodlines because they will produce these traits, genetically. As a trainer I refuse to instill drives into a dog that are not there genetically. That would make for a sub-standard dog. I can continue your education if you would like, but, we would have to do it through private email instead of here. Let me know and thank you again.

PPS. Abby, you are absolutely correct, i used the wrong word. But you made the point very clear which is what I was trying to do. The drive has to be there genetically, it is not something you can teach a dog. Either they have it or they do not. Once again, I stand corrected Abby. Thank you for the input.

Exactly, banning does nothing. Why not? because now that Pit Bulls are banned, the 'thugs' and 'hoodrats' will find another breed to pick on, probably the Rottweiler. Then, next thing you know, they'll be banned and they'll find another dog and so on, until only chihuahua's and poodles are left.

My uncle used to own Golden Retrievers and I was attacked by one of them when I was 4. I tripped over the carpet and fell on his foot and he attacked me. I had stitches, but that's not the point. He was raised to be a 'guard' dog and to be agressive, they should have put the dog down when it bit my uncle. But nnooo..

I own Pit Bulls also, and I love them to death.

The ban wont do any good, but it's not our responsibility to decide whether or not they should be banned or not. I think they should just ban irresponsible owners from owning ANY dogs. If they're going to train them to fight then they don't deserve them..

I know for a fact that banning them won't help anything. I go to the humane societies around my area and the majority of dogs in there are pit crosses. I would take at least one home if they didn't get to be so big. My boyfriend had a pit cross with I think a black lab and he loved my man and his, at the time, elementary age boy. He was never aggressive toward strangers or other dogs. He would have licked you to death rather than bite you. I plan on getting a pit cross once I get a place of my own and just say it's an American Bulldog cross!!

People are followers, for one. Because pit bulls are the primary breed used in dog fighting, people associate it with it being their breed rather than just the temperament of that dog. Also, people are ignorant. Instead of doing their own research, they choose to jump on bandwagons and ride along. I personally feel that if dog fight rings were shut-down, people would eventually shut-up and leave the breed alone. States should focus more on the illegal fighting of dogs (which can carry very small penalties), rather than banning a breed due to the ignorance of others!

People that have no idea about the breed are the ones that are ignorant to the type of dogs that they really are. My daughter has three in her home with two daughters, ages 4&6 and there has NEVER been a problem. Pits are like any other dog, they can be big babies or vicious! Individuals are what makes a dog!!! I agree with you!!!

Local governments support bans because it means they don't have to deal with the root of the problem they can just take anyones pit away, the real problem is people who fight pits or abuse any animal need to be dealt with on a case to case basis. And bans make people who are uneducated on animal issues feel good since they believe if pits are banned then all dog fighting will just go away. Truth is dog fighting was never legal so a ban does nothing , you don't see fighting pits being walked down the street or brought to the vet, they are ususally behind a wooden fence or chained in a basement out of sight.
It's truelly a shame as so many people breed pits to look beautiful with all kinds of colors like blue and merel and huge muscles and wonder family pet. A fighting pit is usually low to the ground, lean and under 50 pounds, never a special color, and covered in scars, oddly enough they are ususally human friendly and easy to handle.

Because those people are not dog savvy and know nothing about dogs! If they ban the pits and manage to somehow get rid of them all, dog fighters will just find another breed to fight with. A dog is a dog is a dog. It is all in how you raise them, not what breed they are that determines their temperament.
