I've tried oxyclean and it doesn't work.
Try club soda.

Carpet Cleaning Tip:
Removing red wine from white carpet.
Wine and grape juice are easily removed with the right technique and reducing bleach.
Purchase a couple of 2 oz. packets of Rit Dye (TM) White-Wash (or Color Remover). The active ingredient is Sodium Hydrosulfate, a very effective reducing bleach.
If the stain is new, dissolve 2 ounces of the White-Wash in very hot water and spray onto the stain. The stain will disappear within a few minutes. Rinse with plain water
If an old stain, apply the White-Wash to the area, cover with a white Turkish towel, apply more diluted White-Wash to the towel and place an iron set at medium on the towel for up to one minute to quickly accelerate
the bleaching action.
WARNING: There is a slight risk of bleaching the carpet.

If you don't already have one you need to get a Shop-Vac. They are a requirement for having kids. You can get a small 5 gallon at Wal-Mart or Home Depot for $35. This is all the bang for your buck, as renting a carpet machine will cost you $25 a day, PLUS you can do SO much more with a Shop-Vac.
With a shop vac you can unclog your regular vacuum, clean out your car and do other chores around the house. The most important thing that my Shop-Vac does is Keep my carpets IMMACULATE. I have two in diapers, a huge black dog and my carpets look brand new. My secret is my Shop-Vac and a pitcher of water.
When I get a spill, even red cough syrup, all you have to do is use the Vac to get the worst up.
*The next step is to pour luke warm water on the spot and vac up.
*Do this several times. You will be esentially rinsing out the stain. I am able to get all of my spots out with this method.
(*)If you have a spot that is urine, vomit or another smelly substance, after rinsing (even though the spot is gone).
*Take a cup of warm water and mix in one tablespoon of regular laundry detergent (Make sure it DOES NOT have color safe bleach in it)
*****COLOR SAFE LAUNDRY DETERGENT IS NOT SAFE FOR CARPET ********
*Pour this solution onto the carpet, massage in, let sit for two minutes then. . .
*Rinse several times with water and the Vac

Try using ordinary washing powder. Mix 1 cup powder to 2 cups hot water and scrub using a scrubbing brush.
I've got five children under the age of 7 who are always spilling things and this always works for me (it even got out permanent marker pen from my sofa).

Sounds silly, but my mom and i got red paint out of a cream carpet, with no leftover color residue, with VODKA! I know, I know...but she swears by it, so I consented, we went out and bought a little bottle, and it worked.
Good luck

I too had the same issue and it was worse, it was red colored candle wax, that was spilt on my carpet. You can get oxyclean and clean up the carpet first. if the color persists, then soak a sponge in detergent and rub it off. it comes off wihtout any issues.
