Why does my silverware tray get so gross if all I put in it is clean silverware?

I've wondered this myself. My guess is that maybe the drawer wasn't closed completely while you were cooking, making toast, etc., and crumbs/small food particles fell in it. Also, maybe your hands weren't thoroughly clean when you put the silverware away. Maybe the dishtowel you used wasn't quite clean when you dried the silverware? I'm sticking with my first guess about the drawer not being closed though. I get a lot of coffee grounds in mine because the drawer where I keep the tray is right under the coffee maker, and I think they fall in it that way. I end up usually having to run the tray through the dishwasher every two months or so.

I think it's because of the drawer opening and closing. I believe you should replace your silverware tray every couple of years. You can also empty it out and run it through the dishwasher. :)

The stuff in your silverware drawers [and everybody elses] is likely to be crumbs and whatnot from the countertop.

My theory has always been it's crumbs from the counter top and wood shavings. We have old old wooden cabinets, and it wouldn't suprise me one bit that some shaves off when opening and closing the drawer.
