I have a full sized microwave, had it for close to 20 years, and inside I can see several places where the metal is showng, the interior lining has, mostly on the bottom portion, and lower back wall. Is this safe to cook with? I have been using it, and it does a good job, just concerned about possible radiation leaks, etc. How safe the food is to continue eating I heat up or cook in it. Or should I get a new one? Thanks for your answers.

You know, I'm not really sure about radiation and things of that sort. What I do know is that you can get a good microwave for under $50. Go ahead and throw old faithful away before you blow your house up!

I too have 20year or more old microwave and I would need more description of the state of the walls inside. It may be just the coating that is damaged in which case all is well. If the lining underneath this is in good condition then you have no worries. I pioneered microwave cooking in the uk and used to watch demos where there was no door at all. We did have detectors but nobody bothers with them now. I could go on..... The most delicate part of the body being the eyes it is never a good idea to press your face against the door. Keep 12 inches away to be sure. Your food will not poison you if it is brought up to the temperature rated by the government as being safe. I believe it is 72 degrees. Naturally I cannot say specifically that I am correct as I cannot see your microwave.
