If there's no way you can get into your car, then call the cops, they'll know what to do. Do not touch the other car yourself!

it is indeed wrong to deliberately hit another person's car. I understand your frustration. I have had it also.

It is true some people park too close to another car without realizing it. I have also seen people park their cars in parking lots taking up more than their share of space. One thing I have done is to leave a polite note on their windshield, not written in anger( angry words whether spoken or written will not attain results) , explaining to them that they parked wrong. Many people, when you bring something to their attention, will not make the same mistake again.

Now, in your situation, if you return to your car and find you cant get in, write the number of the license plate down and return to the store. Ask the manager or whoever is in charge to ask over the intercom for the person who owns the car( give a description of the car, make , kind, etc. and the license plate number. Keep yourself under control and when the offender comes to the service desk or wherever you are, calmly explain the problem you are having. If this situation is handled right, the offender will move his car so you can get into yours.

This is the best way to handle this situation. I speak from experence. It worked for me, it will work for you.

Are you talking about you go out to your car and someone parked their car after you? Or are you talking about someone parked over the line and there isn't enough space for a normal car in the empty space?

If it's the latter, I always park a couple of inches from their car so they can't fit in between our cars. Sometimes I have to back in to do this but it's worth it. This ensures that they won't open their car door into mine and it's a message to them that they are idiots and need to care about how they park. Sure, they might damage my car when they pull out, but they will also damage their own so I feel pretty safe doing it.

You know, I don't think I've ever fell victim to the former. I'm a skinny guy and I park right in the middle of the parking spaces.

No, I do this all the time. It's especially difficult since I have to get my kids out of their car seats, and I need to be able to open the door really wide to do this. I usually slam my car door open as hard as I can, or, in the event the car is still there when I'm finished shopping, I'll "accidentally" slam the shopping cart into it. Oops! It makes me really happy to do this to an expensive/new car when you KNOW for a fact that the person driving parked over the line on purpose to avoid getting any dings/dents in their car.

Of course it is wrong. It is never right to respond to one rudeness with another rudeness, especially if the second rudeness is also illegal and may get you punched in the mouth.

It seems to me there are two types of people who park too close. One is the group who doesn't care; for them I can't make much excuse. The other is the group that is just really bad at parking. I have to admit, after almost 6 years of driving my wife's car, I have never learned to park it properly, mostly because it's so different in front-end configuration from mine.

If you are concerned about etiquette (or for that matter if you are a Christian), you should assume these people are members of the second group. In any case, I would not recommend doing intentional damage, which is illegal and dangerous as well as rude.

while I sympathize with your feelings of frustration, I do not condone willful property damage.

Some people are truly inconsiderate and others are accidentally inconsiderate. Perhaps they were not able to park correctly due to another driver in an adjoining space.

Also, they may be older or handicapped in some way that makes parking in too tight parking lots (and gee - more of them seem to be built TOO narrow these days!) more difficult.

Since I drive a van with a handicap lift, this is an issue we face on a continual basis. People who are not polite or who are in a hurry or who just plain don't care have often whipped a compact car into the blue stripped area between our vehicle and another one also parked in a handicapped space. (My solution was to call the police and have them towed.)

Instead of expressing your frustration in a way that can get you into trouble (most stores have video surveillance in their parking lots now!!!), try to brush it off and go on with your day.

Just make sure that next time, you aren't the careless parker...

I think that if someone is stupid enough to park to close to me and I can't get into my car without "banging" the crap out it -- so be it. That guy should have been more careful!

While I agree with the sentiment, it is wrong to bang the other car. One you're willfully damaging another's property. Two, they may have parked that way either not noticing or becuase of some other inconsiderate person.

Are you one of those people who park over the line, taking up a space and a half? When I see someone parked that way (when parking spaces are not in abundance) I just LOVE to park as close to them as possible.

you already know the answer, of course it's wrong. however, it may be alright to just break the window out and use a pipe wrench to turn the ignition so you can put it out of gear and coast it into the middle of a nearby pond, or highway or whatever you have available. I think that would be alright.
