Because it's not natural to 90% of the world . You have to avoid the sun to get that way. People live in temperate climates and still try to avoid the sun like it's the plague. There is nothing wrong with pale skin though to me personally. What about dark skin.....why is that portrayed so negatively by the whole world.

Its probably because all of the people in the media are rich, so they spend their time hanging in warm places. The effect of being in a warm place is obviously a tan, so conclusively being tanned is positive because it makes you look rich.
Probably has something to do with the shunning of goth type people too, most of society will see goths as ridiculous. So people in the media having similar characteristics to them will also probably put them in a negative view, so they wise up and become tanned :).
Personally, I think pale skin is a good characteristic in some people. Some people suit it, its not a thing to be shunned really, people are scared of difference, but really its whats different that makes people beautiful. (obviously not in the eyes of some, who like large breasted blondes who have plastic looking faces...) You've got to look beyond that model and see what beauty really is...

It's just a sign of the times. These days the "well-to -do" go on vacactions and lounge in the sun for a tan...........Seems to make everyone think they are healthy looking so it's a desireable thing.
Years ago, it was a sign of the working class who laboured outdoors. The aristocracy remained inside or sheltered themselves under sun umbrellas. The pale skin was a sign that you didn't have to work.

I think that the tan phase is going out. I'm seeing more and more fair skinned and pale models.
While some people think it looks sickly, I see it as healthy because they won't have leathered skin and have a smaller chance of getting skin cancer when they are older. Bleh.

Because the media is after the unreal...
Most people that don't tan religiously at a parlor or the beach have their natural skin tone. And I guess the media isn't a big fan of natural...must be why so many celebs have surgery. Natural and normal is out of style to them.

I guess the fine line is between pale skin and fair skin. Fair skin is coveted (especially in Asian societies!) and taking care of your skin and using sunblock is very popular. Pale skin on the other hand suggests a sick pallor, and obviously it does not look attractive.

People tend to have the impression that this person is either under nourishment or is sick. Thus apply a basic layer of loose powder with foundation so as to avoid looking sickly in the media.

I'm not sure but I have very fair skin and I don't really care...I'd rather have pale skin and be healty than be nearly black and get cancer...I'm not being racist I like black people just fine I just don't think everyone should have to be so tan...We are all different and we should accept the way we are.

When you are tan, you appear leaner and happier than being pale. Its common knowledge that exposure to the sun can make you happier, and that being underexposed to the sun can make you sad. (Seasonal affective disorder) So seeing people who are golden and tanned is sort of showcased by the media as Happy people. Hope this helps

Because they want people to go out and spend all of their money on that sunless tanner. They make ya feel bad to get you to spend on "looking better". I happen to love pale skin, like Marilyn Manson's ex Rose McGowen, or somethin' like that. Her pale skin is priceless.
