It is a myth that every human year equals 7 dog years. The first year equals about 14 dog years, the second equals about 6, and each following year is about 4 years. This is why most medium to large breeds are not considered fully mature until about 2-3 years of age, and not considered senior until 9-10 years of age (48-52 dog years, not 63-70 as it would be in the old 1=7 method).

Dogs have an average life span of only 12 years.
Humans have an average life span of 85 years.

Therefore dogs live only 1/7th the age of humans.

This is why most people say that 1 human year = 7 dog years.

But the dog is 1 year old after 1 year. Always.

The whole 1 dog year = 7 human years thing is BS. Dogs can reproduce at one year -- can a human 7 year old have a baby?

Here's a chart that's closer to the truth:

Of course, this varies depending on the size of the dog (larger breeds mature more slowly than small breeds), but it's definitely more accurate than 1=7!

My vet says that the seven to one ratio is just an average over the dog's life and that in the first two human years of a dog's life, a dog will age to the equivalent of about 18 years old.

So I would figure, if that's true, that a dog that is one in human years is about 9 or 10 in dog years.

Dogs are techinically still puppies until they are about two years old.

well technically they don't start doing the whole, 7years for a dog equals 1 year for a human until their 3rd year. However you will see in the first year, that even dogs go through the terrible twos, and so-on and so-on. So its safe to say they're getting through the teenage years at the 2nd birthday. Call your vet though, i know it sounds like a silly question to ask a vet, but they can tell you for sure.

For every human year dogs gain 7 years. So a one year old dog would be seven. I heard its five for cats if you were wondering lol.
