I may be interseted in buying a toy poodle fairly soon. With all costs set aside (I am willing to pay whatever for grooming), can I keep my dog's fur soft, like a puppy cut or will it be wirey? If you know any additional information about grooming, please post!
Thanks
~Taylor

Keeping the coat softer requires you to have the groomer scissor the coat by hand rather than using clippers to trim the coat. This is what professional show dog handlers do to keep the coat in the best shape. Also, feeding a quality diet will help keep the coat soft and healthy!

I have a maltese, which is not the same as a poodle but I do have some experience in the wiry vs. soft issue. There are a few factors that are going to affect the quality of the coat. I know of lots of poodles with lovely soft fur, so I think you are ok in terms of the breed itself having generally soft fur.
However, the nutrition you give your pet is going to have a HUGE effect on their fur (just like if we don't eat right, our hair and skin doesn't look as nice) so make sure your pup is fed a high quality diet.
Another huge difference you can make is by using high quality grooming products. Again, if I use suave, my hair doesn't really look great, but if I spring for biolage or paul mitchell it will look alot better! Try to think of your dogs fur-care in the same light. Use conditioner and make sure to brush regularly between groomings.
A short cut won't be as fluffy soft, but will probably be very pleasant to the touch.
However, I would finally warn that bad breeding and genetics play a role it in some too. And a puppy will always have softer fur than an adult dog. So if you are buying a dog (check your local shelters. you'd be amazed how may toys end up there, I volunteer for the ASPCA and we had 20 toy poodles once!) make sure you check out the parents and the breeder and do your homework before jumping in.
Good luck with your new companion!

poodles have soft fur and it stays that way through their enire life.
But.
They also have a lot of skin oils and flakey skin and it means that they leave your hands greasy and sometimes smelly. More so than other dogs. This is one of the reasons that poodles are groomed as much as they are, becasue it cuts down on the dander.
Poodles as a breed were used for herding and the oily fur allowed them a huge protection from the elements. They are also very smart dogs (the smartest breed of all, say some) and actually like to be brushed, combed, and trimmed.
If yor give them aclose cut, be sure to keep them indoors since the loss of their fur also means a loss of protectin, and they can catch cold.
Good luck with your poodle!

I think it can be both. Of course, puppies are generally softer than adults (just like baby's skin is softer than adult skin), but for the most part, it will be soft with a few coarse hairs here and there. If you want a really tiny poodle, consider a teacup poodle. They are so cute! Good luck! :)

Taylor,
I have a toy poodle. Her fur is very soft. I haven't taken her to the groomers and her hair has NEVER been wirey. If you have any questions about poodles let me know! E-mail me! They are very good friends! I love mine! There are some toy poodles on www.puppiesposted.com. That's where I got mine. The lady is very nice! She takes care of her dogs very well. Toy poodles are very playful though! But they are sweet! My toy poodle always play with my big dog. When mine is playing she acts like she's a big dog bet when it's time to cuddle she's as sweet as can be!

Lots of conditioning since their hair can get matted pretty bad if they run through bushes or get stuff caught in their fur. Brush the dog at least a couple times a day each day to keep it managable. Do this after a grooming job since it helps keep the hair manageable until the next time. Invest in dog deodorant since matted hair can trap dirt and odors and even cause skin infections. I owned one and occassionally his hair would get matted from stuff that got caught and tangled up in his hair since he liked napping in the yard by our rose bushes.

u should not cut it because my grandmas dog gets its hair cut and it becomes very wirey. just keep your dogs hair clean and wash it when it gets outside 5 or 6 times.
