i'm preparing some 1099's for various american contributors and am missing the SSN or tax ref no's.. is there a free site where i can enter an individual's name / address and the result would be their contact number etc so as i could contact them ???????????

oops should have been a little more descriptive. I work for a newspaper, hence contributors, the 1099's are for stories they havecontributed to the paper that we have paid them for.
the new system allows payments to be made to individuals without entering all of the various creditor details - hence only have address and names and no contact numbers, hence trying to locate them to get theire ssn..

Try www.anywho.com or even google their names (as well as their city/state of residence) and see what comes up.

You have to give the individual a Form W-7 to fill out and sign and return to you. Due to identity theft problems and terrorist activity concerns you will have to provide them with your name and number along with the request so that they know everything is completely legal and yada.

Why are you preparing 1099s for "contributors". You don't prepare them for people who give you money, you prepare them for people who you pay money to.
