My girlfriend works at a "salon" i guess you'd call it....

She used to do my hair before i started buzzing it for motorcyle season.

The other day we were at her house and she took a stab at people who don't tip her.

Honestly...i didn't even realize i was supposed to.
Since when do we have to tip people who we're paying $15 for a simple hair cut that takes 15 or 20 minutes to do?

It took all my strength not to say "maybe if it was a better cut, you would have gotten something"
just to get back at her stab at me...but i didn't want to cause trouble.

So.....what's the deal?
should there be a tip?
and how much?

Also, i realize that she has expenses such as booth rental and all that...

i had to buy a bunch of dress shirts for this job, but i don't expect any tips when i help people out.
even when i save them boatloads of money.

Tipping is an American custom only. The employee is supposed to be paid by the employer...and only the employer. They are supposed to do a good job...that is what they are paid to do. But, in America, we have this feeling of entitlement. If I am paid to do X, I will do X, but only enough of X to get by. If I do a really good job doing X, I ~must~ therefore deserve more money.

Tipping is supposed to be a nicety. A treat.
Now it is expected.
A "gratuity" that is automatically added or expected is no longer a "gratuity." It becomes simply part of the bill.

It's usually customary to tip the barber $1-3.
Remember that the person who is cutting or styling your hair is probably not getting all that money that you pay up front.
Traditionally, many barber shops work or at least used to work on a different system for payment also. The barber...often several in the same shop, would 'rent' his chair from the shop owner daily. It was then up to him to cover his expenses and profit for the day by giving as many haircuts as possible. The tip is/was kind of like saying "thank you for not giving me an unsightly bald spot in your hurry to finish cutting my hair so you can get to the next guy."

I tip my beautician $5 every time I see her (which is every two weeks). I think it's just customary. After they pay booth rental and buy all the supplies (combs, shampoo, conditioner, etc.) I'm not sure how much of the base rate they actually realize.
I think there should be a tip - what they do takes skill and practice. You should base your tip on the quality of work and the promptness of service.

in case you propose on on no account going to that barber returned and you have been unhappy with the decrease, no i does no longer tip him. A tip should not be anticipated, it is going to be earned. If, in spite of if, you propose on going back and you particularly do no longer think of the blunders grew to become into that enormous of a deal, i'd tip him/her.

People tip based on how good the service is. One doesn't have to tip a barber and basically, what you thought ("maybe if it was a better cut, you would have gotten something")but didn't say, was correct.

I give the girl who washes my hair 2-3 dollars & the person who styles it 5 dollars. I do not tip if it's the owner.

I always drop two bucks on a tip at the barber. Even when I got it buzzed.
