We took my chihuahua Sophie to the vet today because she has been lethargic and the vet said she may have a deadly uterine infection. He said it sometimes happens after a heat cycle. He is doing blood tests now to be sure. If she does have it she will have to have surgery to get her uterus and ovaries removed. I have been reading up on it and heard that the surgery itself is life threatening. I'm so scared, she my baby girl, shes only a year old. Anyone else gone through this?

Pyometra (the uterine infection you're probably talking about) is not uncommon. There are two ways to treat it -- the easiest is spaying.

If your vet gets her into surgery and removes that infected uterus right away, she should be fine! As long as the utereus doesn't rupture, she will recover!

I dealt with this several years ago with one of my girls. Very scary!

Good luck!

first off, her having a hysterectomy isnt that bad. i mean, spaying her in the first place would have saved you this hassle, but its basically the same thing, just a little more invasive now that she's matured. as for an infection, be greatful you caught it, and she can be put on antibiotics (hopefully she has been already).

but remember, millions of dogs get spayed, millions of women get hysterectomies. this is a common proceedure, which means there is less likely a chance of something going wrong, but since it is surgery, there is always that chance. just be strong, and remember that you're saving her life right now.

My Dalmatian had pyometria (the infection you speak of) just last year. It was the scariest thing I've ever experienced. I found her unconscious, in a pool of vomit. She lost all bowel and bladder control and was seizing. I am amazed she made it to the vet.

They did emergency surgery... but she pulled through.

I am happy to say that it was a success and she is happy and healthy now.

Just know that she is in good hands. We'll be praying for her.
