People have grown away from each other. Instead of playing and working together (which build friendship and familiarity) we do so separately; often times behind a computer screen as we all are now.
So people no longer feel attachments to those around them nor any sens of obligation to help each other. We can change this though.
Simply live the way you wish others to live. Be an example and keep on smiling. Wave to others and say hello. Ask how they are doing and introduce yourself.
You may make a new friend and change attitudes at the same time!

You're right. A smile and/or a friendly gesture goes a long way. A study was done in the last couple years, which suggested that a positive gesture such as a smile, a wave, or a friendly word, can affect the mood of each person it is passed on to, and in turn compound to benefit up to 250 people by the end of the day.

Seems strange, doesn't it, that people will react negatively to another person who has a beautiful smile on their face.
I try to smile and say hello to most people, particularly if we've made eye contact for some reason.
Why not? Projecting a smile toward someone can't be a bad thing ever, even if they don't know how to receive it. ;-)
I personally hug lots of people at work. Most people see me as the sweet 'neo-hippie-love' person at work and everyone wants their hug when I come in. lol. But there are a few who think I'm strange and even fewer who think I must be promiscuous due to the fact that many of our medics are male. Ah, well. In my job, we can all use a smile and a hug so I just do it anyway.
Keep on smiling! Those who need the smile will receive it happily. Thanks for being kind!

Oh yes all the time. I am from South Lousiana and wveryone there is very friendly, but when I moved to Atlanta....its a big difference. I ALWAYS say "Pardon me" or "excuse me" when I have to get by someone or walk in front of someone looking at a shelf in a grocery store for example. People here never say anything, and they will stay in your way like you dont even exist. Also, peeople here do not say "Bless you" when you sneeze that much at all. That is just an observance though. I am always polite and hold doors, let people through etc...Its just that here people are so busy thinking of themselves that they fail to realize that the world does not revolve around them.

Agreed, it is a very hostile world out there. There's so many weirdos out there though. Eye contact with the wrong person can ultimately ruin your day! Yesterday I was the park and a older woman walked past the bench I was on and bent down and picked up a feather on the ground and put it in her bag. It seemed so pure and we shared a smile as she stood up. It felt really nice.

Your smiling at people is a good thing. Regardless of their surface reaction. You are trying to do good, and you're not hurting anybody, therefore you ARE doing good.
Today's society is kinda paranoid, for whatever reason. But when I see someone smile, I find it pleasing. One little way that makes my life a little nicer. So I thank you for it.
Keep it up! Don't let the turkeys get you down!

I agree -- but people these days are less trusting of others, they also are much more selfish and less giving, and they know it -- so when they see someone else bieng more giving or just in a good mood and smiling they tend to be more defensive and wonder what they want as opposed to giving that back!
