I'm really confused with this issue. Isn't this something exactly like what Egyptian and Greek and Roman mythologies used to say?
Some people have indicated that it's a missinterpretation of the phrase "Sons of god", saying that it really means the descendants of Seth. However it doesn't make sense because the whole book of Enoch deals with these hybrid descendants, the Nephilim.
Are we following just another pagan religion with the bible?
Thanks!
Ignacio

AMAZING! I can't believe the number of people that actually believe this to be true. Brilliant, I can't help but wonder where the US is headed with it's current state of education.

It is all recycled mythology. The same as the way that Roman mythology is recycled Greek mythology.

When questioned by the Sadducees, Jesus gave the answer in Matthew 22:30.
Angels are sexless and can not have sexual intercourse.
When that reference is made to the "sons of God", they were those who believe in and follow God. (Hosea 1:10, John 1:12)
They were still men.
The Nephilim were giants, the descendants of Arba, the son of Anak. I have heard a linkage made between Anak and Cain - that a result of the "mark of Cain" may be giantiasis(?sp).

That's one of the big reasons God flooded the earth. To get rid of those monsters.Flavius Josephus ,a Jewish historian says it was and that these Hybrid monsters were the source of the Greek legends.Angels are not to have sex but then they weren't supposed to follow Satan either. But they did.The "Sons of God" in Hebrew is "Benai Eloihem" that always stands for angels .

When ever some one gives me a Bible verse to parse or ponder over I ask myself whats in the rest of the chapter. Sons of God refers to Adam and Eves lineage. Angels are Genderless. No one can have sex with an Angel unless it is a genetic girl who goes by the name of Angel. when you read the rest of chapter six you find that God cursed those sons of God. God was grieved by the wickedness of man. How did God deal with the wickedness. He had Noah build and Ark and when the ark was finished and had all things aboard that God wanted on board he created a storm that flooded the Earth.

The Nephilim were real. It is because of the offspring between the Nephilim and mankind that God flooded the world during the time of Noah, evidently God did not approve of the mating.
Recently scientist have discovered what is called "junk" DNA in humans but it seems that it isn't junk. We not only have our own DNA but the DNA of something/someone else. It is now accepted that humans have bicameral DNA. It makes sense to believe that this so called junk DNA is the dna of the Nephilim and is shared by human dna.

You've received several very good answers, but all seem to miss the most important point: these "sons of God" (fallen angels) impregnated women with ONE PURPOSE -- to negate the first Messianic prophecy in the Bible, found at Genesis 3:15 "And I will put enmity between you [Satan] and the woman, And between your seed and her Seed; He [the Messiah] shall bruise your head, And you shall bruise His heel.”
If Satan's plan to contaminate all of humanity by interbreeding humans and angels had succeeded, a true human woman wouldn't be available to bear the only begotten Son of God.
But this shows how foolish Satan's plan was, since God's word can never return to Him void.

You would have to read the ancient Greek translation from the original Hebrew.
These "sons of god" were really sons of Satan who took human form. Some have claimed that the Neanderthals were the Nephilim but they were killed in Noah's flood and no longer exist because the convenant was passed to Noah and his son Shem.

The angels that had sex with human women were fallen angels. Those cast down to earth when Satan left heaven. This is why God chose to destroy the earth with the great flood. Read the following verse and it relates to why there was such evil on the earth at that time, because the "fallen" angels were breeding with the human women.

I don't think you seriously care about Genesis 6:4. Where does Angels come into play?

My interpretation of this scripture is that the phrase "sons of God" is not referring to angels, but to men born on the earth. We are all "spiritual" sons and daughters of God as we are made in his image, and he is the creator of our spiritual bodies, and is therefor literately the father of our spirits. See Hebrews 12:9.
Genesis 6:4 simply means that men and women got together and started having families, and some made choices that took them away from God.

1st Read the Rest of the Passage:
"Those were the mighty men who were of old, men of renown."
The Author of Genesis is reflecting back on these authentic humans.
Secondly, the Bible will reflect other religions because some aspects of other religions are a part of the universal culture and understanding. Thus the Bible is culturally relevant for the time period.
