Police Officers always have their authority that is afforded to them. That is their powers of arrest and to keep the peace and uphold the law.
That doesn't mean they aren't allowed to have a life. You should never find a cop drunk who is still armed, and they won't get involved in anything Police related when they are intoxicated.

As the above post mentioned, like it or not, officers are held to a higher standard, and are expected to be a good image in the public eye, though it is not always true.
Most officers (I can't speak for every state, just Ga here) Are not "24/7 on duty" But they ARE on an "on call" basis pretty much 24/7, which means, in the event of a major inicident or emergency, they are obligated to react in due time, OR work extended hours and shifts. Hence the entire point behind lots of coffee and doughnuts, and less use of alcohol, lol.
It doesnt mean an officer can't drink for fear of being called in or something happening, it just means he has to make the right choices and decisions, just like any other working class american. They also get vacations, trips, time off, and absent days as well, good benefits ya know, that give them time to drink too.

First and foremost, officers that get drunk in public are foolish at best, dangerous at worst. I cannot speak for other departments, but mine has a departmental policy against public intoxication. Public intoxication is illegal! I drink at home, in the state of Ca. I have an obligation to act in an emergency situation. This obligation is not negated because we are off the clock. Officers that drink in public are asking for trouble. We have a bad enough rap in the public eye, last thing we need is self inflicted wounds. Like it or not we are held to a higher standard.

They should'nt but maybe they also do it because they
are actually also human beings.........................................
Sometimes they make mistakes, do things that other
people do as well................................................................
If you are allowed to drink, then if they go to a do they
should also be allowed to drink as well, provided of
course that they are not then going out to peoples
homes and they have a friend drive them home if
they get drunk...........................................................................
Policemen and women are human beings as well and they
are also entitled to have fun and be just like you and I...........
Drunk on duty, they would get into trouble for that..................
