Many cities and communities limit you to 3 or 4. Check with your city, county, or homeowners associate for specifics on your neighborhood. If you live out in the country you may not have any limits.

It depends on your city ordinances. In my city there is a two dog or cat limit. I have five dogs so I had to get a kennel license to prove I can house and feed them all and provide medical care. I found this annoying at first, but it's probably a good idea because it helps prevent "hoarders" and puppy mills.

As many as you can support and provide for, but the vet costs could get astronomically high since it costs as much as a human to get medical care.
