After nearly a year of constant ear infections my oldest child then five was found to have extremely large tonsils and adnoids. They caused problems with her hearing and a lot of infections. she had hers removed. My middle child does not complain about her ears but does have balance problems and is increasingly irritable she will be five soon.

There are two sides to this issue. First, surgery, any surgery, is a serious business no matter how "routine" it is. It should not be done unless needed. That being said, I will tell you that I am 43 years old and have never had mine out. I had problems with them as a child but had a gutless doctor who simply refused to remove them. Now I pay for it. The comfort, both present and future, of your child is most important. Have a serious talk with your doctor about it, don't let him/her sidetrack the conversation, let him/her know that you are there to discuss THIS issue only. Back them into a corner on it and make them give you a straight answer. If you don't like the answer, please get a second opinion. This is not as hard to do as one would think. I know that often times there is an insurance company involved that restricts which doctors you can go to but some companies will work with you if you let them know that you are not satisfied with the service you are getting from your present doctor. I certainly wish my parents would have got a second opinion. Hope this helps.

BTW, one child having problems does not mean that the other ones will as well. Me and my two sisters had problems, my brother never did.

If you found out that the tonsils are always enlarge and congested, meaning even if without pain but congested you have to see a ENT for them to evaluate if they have to be removed but as far as my study, if it already congested, it have to be removed to prevent kissing tonsils that may lead to difficulty of breathing....

Why don't you have them removed?

I never did and I've been sick all my life. From major sore throats, ear infections, infections caused by my sore throats.

Sister - she had her removed and never had the problems I did.
